At 1:40 of the extra session, Ilya Lyubushkin scored a shorthanded goal to give the visitors the overtime victory, after Steven Stamkos went down in the high slot and Buffalo quickly took the puck in the opposite direction.
Despite the loss, Tampa Bay extends its home point streak to 16 games.
Up next for the Bolts is a weekend back-to-back set that will take them to Detroit and Pittsburgh.

The Sabres tied it up on their first shot on goal at 11:41 of the first period. Rasmus Dahlin circled the zone and tried to center the puck. The feed took an inadvertent deflection off Zemgus Girgensons' skate and slipped through Andrei Vasilevskiy for the equalizer.

On the penalty kill, the Bolts got caught with only one skater back, and Buffalo made them pay on an odd man rush. Jeff Skinner played a cross-ice feed to Tage Thompson, who beat Vasilevskiy's outstretched glove to give the Sabres the lead.

A feed for Pat Maroon got knocked away by Ilya Lyubushkin. Pinching down from the point, Victor Hedman stepped into the loose puck at the left circle and wired a slapshot past Comrie to get make it a one-goal game just 16 seconds after Thompson's second goal.

It remained a one-goal deficit for less than a minute. From the corner, Peyton Krebs sent a behind-back feed to Jack Quinn and his shot got through Vasilevskiy's five-hole.

Hedman found a streaking Point at the offensive blue line to create a chance in alone on Comrie. Point slid a backhander through Comrie's five-hole to get Tampa Bay back within a goal.

Thompson completed his hat trick just 30 seconds after Point's goal, beating Vasilevskiy on a breakaway to put the Sabres back up two.

The Bolts began overtime on the power play after the majority of a Buffalo delay of game penalty carried over into the extra session. However, Stamkos got pulled down in the high slot and Lyubushkin quickly went the other way and scored to earn the Sabres the second point.
