The outdoor game, which will take place at Carter-Finley Stadium on the campus of North Carolina State on Feb. 18 at 8 p.m. ET, was originally scheduled to be broadcast on ESPN. It will be broadcast on SN360, SN NOW and TVAS2 in Canada.
It will be the Hurricanes' first outdoor game, making them the 28th NHL team to play one. Carolina was supposed to host the Stadium Series game at Carter-Finley Stadium in 2021, but that was canceled because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The Capitals have won each of their previous three outdoor games. They defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 in the 2011 NHL Winter Classic at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in the 2015 NHL Winter Classic at Nationals Park in Washington, and the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-2 in the 2018 NHL Stadium Series at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.
Carolina defeated Washington in seven games in the Eastern Conference First Round in the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The Hurricanes won 3-2 in a shootout against the Capitals at PNC Arena on Oct. 31. They will also play at Washington on Feb. 14, four days prior to the Stadium Series game.
The NHL also announced Thursday that the game between the Vegas Golden Knights and New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Jan. 24 will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET instead of 7 p.m. It will be broadcast exclusively on ESPN+ and HULU.
