The 31-year-old was joined on the ice for the ceremony by his parents, Mikhail and Tatyana, his brother, Mikhail, and wife, Nastya Shubskaya. After a video of Ovechkin's teammates offering individual congratulations played on the center ice scoreboard, Capitals owner Ted Leonsis and team president Dick Patrick presented him with a gold stick engraved with his career achievements and NHL senior vice president Jim Gregory gave him a Tiffany crystal.
Ovechkin reached the milestone in his 880th NHL game, making him the second-fastest active player to 1,000 points behind Jaromir Jagr (763 games) and the 24th-fastest player to the mark in NHL history. He was the 84th player overall and fourth Russia-born player (Sergei Fedorov, Alexander Mogilny and Alexei Kovalev) to get to 1,000 points. He was the first to do it all with the Capitals.
In addition, Ovechkin's 545 career goals were the second most through a player's first 1,000 points in League history behind Brett Hull's 560.
He has continued to add to his totals since Jan. 11. He entered the game Sunday with 550 goals, 463 assists for 1,013 points in 891 games.
As part of the 1,000-point celebration, those in attendance Sunday received a large cutout of Ovechkin's face on a stick. On the back of the cutout was a Snapchat Snapcode that permitted fans to unlock a commemorative geo-filter on their smartphones that transformed their photos into a grinning Ovechkin.
The Snapcode was also available on the Capitals' social media accounts.
