Ovechkin, who scored his 802nd goal to pass Howe against the Winnipeg Jets on Dec. 23, will receive special gifts from the Capitals, his teammates, the NHL and the NHL Players' Association. Howe's son,

, will be on hand for the on-ice ceremony along with Ovechkin's wife, Nastya, sons Sergei and Ilya, mother, Tatyana, brother, Mikhail, Capitals owner Ted Leonsis, Capitals president Dick Patrick and NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly.
Ovechkin has scored 36 goals this season to reach 816 in his 18 NHL seasons. The 37-year-old left wing trails only

, who retired in 1999 with an NHL record 894 goals.

Howe, who died in 2016 when he was 88, retired in 1980 when he was 52.
The Capitals will wear jerseys with Ovechkin's No. 8 during warmups that will be signed and auctioned by the Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation. Fans in attendance will receive an Ovechkin goal-counter bobblehead. The bobblehead box includes a QR code for "AR Ovi", an augmented reality experience to honor Ovechkin for passing Howe.
A group of 200 season ticket holders will line the hallway leading to the Capitals locker room to welcome Ovechkin and the rest of the team to the game. Fans along the glass during warmups will be given Ovechkin cutouts and all fans will be able to visit an Ovechkin-themed goal throne featuring more than 802 pucks on the 100 level arena concourse.
