Forward Kevin Hayes was the most recent player to wear No. 13 for the Rangers. He wore it from 2014-15 until he was traded to the Winnipeg Jets on Feb. 25, 2019.
The first player to ever wear No. 13 for the Rangers was Jack Stoddard, who wore it for the 1951-52 season. He had the distinction, at the time, of being the NHL's tallest player at 6-foot-3.
The last time the Rangers won the Stanley Cup, they had a No. 13 on the roster. It was worn by forward Sergei Nemchinov during the 1993-94 season.
Lafrieniere was not able to wear No. 11, which he wore for Rimouski of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season and Canada at the 2020 IIHF World Junior Championship, because it is retired in honor of Mark Messier, who was the captain of that 1994 Cup-winning team.
The NHL had 19 players who wore No. 13 during the 2019-20 season, including two members of the Metropolitan Division All-Star Team: New York Islanders forward Mathew Barzal and New Jersey Devils forward Nico Hischier, who also was selected No. 1, in the 2017 NHL Draft.
