Ducks snap 11-game winless streak with shutout win

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Trevor Zegras scored his second lacrosse-style goal of the season for the Anaheim Ducks in a 5-0 win against the Arizona Coyotes at Gila River Arena on Friday.

Zegras pulled off the move to make it 3-0 at 9:42 of the first period. After his initial between-the-legs shot was stopped by Karel Vejmelka, Zegras immediately collected the rebound onto the blade of his stick, skated around the net and whipped a shot around teammate Sonny Milano into an open net.
"I kind of saw the play and made it. There was nobody really behind the net, so I figured, `Pick it up,'" Zegras said. "If there was anybody in my way it was Sonny, which was pretty funny. I don't think he even saw me, to be honest."
Said Ducks coach Dallas Eakins, "I think there's a time for it and that was certainly one. He had lots of time to get it done. I think what might even be more impressive was Sonny's ability to get out of the way and make himself super skinny."
Zegras previously became the third player in NHL history to score a lacrosse-style goal when he did it against the Montreal Canadiens on Jan. 27. Andrei Svechnikov of the Carolina Hurricanes scored the first two in the NHL (against the Calgary Flames on Oct. 29, 2019, and at the Colorado Avalanche on Dec. 19, 2019), and Filip Forsberg of the Nashville Predators scored the third on Jan. 14, 2020, against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
"Troy (Terry) and the guys were giving me a little flak because I guess it's a funny goal to score and it doesn't happen all the time," said Zegras, who hadn't scored since March 8 (10 games). "But nonetheless, it was good to get on the board."

ANA@ARI: Zegras nets signature lacrosse-style goal

Isac Lundestrom had two goals and an assist, and Anthony Stolarz made 22 saves for his third shutout this season for the Ducks (28-30-12), who were 0-8-3 in their previous 11 games.
The Coyotes (21-42-5) are 1-6-1 in their past eight games. Vejmelka allowed three goals on nine shots before being replaced by Josef Korenar, who made 26 saves.
"I wanted to change the momentum of the game a little bit," Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said of the goalie change. "They capitalized on their chances, obviously the third goal (by Zegras) there wasn't much he could do."
Lundestrom put Anaheim in front 1-0 at 3:38 of the first, skating in alone down the right wing before shooting glove side.
"We got pucks deep, played a simple game and did a good job of creating chances," Stolarz said. "We haven't been doing that lately, but we kind of wore them down."
Gerry Mayhew pushed it to 2-0 at 7:41 on a slap shot from the right face-off circle that went off the tip of Vejmelka's glove.
After Zegras scored his highlight-reel goal, Cam Fowler made it 4-0 at 5:44 of the second when he shot from the high slot on a 3-on-1 rush during a 4-on-4.
"The story of the game was our start," Tourigny said. "We had a few opportunities. If we could have buried them, it's a different game. But then they got the fourth one and it became a monster."

ANA@ARI: Stolarz records 3rd shutout of season

Lundestrom scored his second goal at 7:25 of the third for the 5-0 final.
The Coyotes were playing their first game without leading scorer Clayton Keller, who is out for the season after the forward broke his leg against the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday.
"It was obviously a big loss," Arizona forward Michael Carcone said. "When he goes down, guys have to step up, and that's what we have to do."
