Hayton's OT winner helps Coyotes end 9-game skid

TEMPE, Ariz. --Barrett Hayton scored with one minute remaining in overtime, and the Arizona Coyotes ended a nine-game skid with a 5-4 win against the Anaheim Ducks at Mullett Arena on Saturday.

Hayton scored after he carried the puck into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1 and toe-dragged the puck around Anaheim defenseman Cam Fowler.
Matias Maccelli tied it for Arizona with 35 seconds left in the third period.
"It was a rough stretch for us," Hayton said. "Obviously, it's frustrating not winning, so it's good to come back and find a way to win this."
Maccelli and Clayton Keller each had a goal and an assist, and J.J. Moser and Nick Schmaltz each had two assists for the Coyotes (28-39-13), who were 0-7-2 in their previous nine games. Ivan Prosvetov made 25 saves.
"It's always more fun to win," Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said. "We want to win. We want to finish on the right note. It's fun after the game, everybody's smiling, and you have a feeling of pride. We're all professionals and we want to win every night."

Adam Henrique scored twice, and Ryan Strome had a goal and two assists in his 700th NHL game for the Ducks (23-45-11), who have been outscored 44-18 in 10 straight losses (0-9-1). Olle Eriksson Ek made 34 saves in his NHL debut.
Fowler had 38:55 of ice time, setting an NHL regular-season record since time on ice tracking began in the 1997-98 season. Anaheim played 13 forwards and five defensemen after Scott Harrington, a defenseman, sustained an upper-body injury in warmups. Forward Nikita Nesterenko was added to the lineup. There was no update on Harrington after the game.
"Our guys, I'm really proud of how they continue to work, how they stick together, how they're supporting each other," Ducks coach Dallas Eakins said. "This season is a tough one, but we'll all be better for it."
Max Jones gave Anaheim a 4-3 lead at 18:06 of the third period when he cut to the middle and scored glove side from the high slot.
Maccelli tied it 4-4 on a one-timer from the right face-off circle off a cross-ice pass from Keller.

ANA@ARI: Maccelli one-times puck home to tie the game

"'Celly' putting that one in, it's obviously a big goal," Coyotes forward Christian Fischer said. "Obviously, we don't want to go down with a minute or so left, that wasn't part of our game plan, but what a great way to respond."
Fischer gave Arizona a 1-0 lead at 12:12 of the first period. After Moser carried the puck behind the net, he sent a backhand centering pass to Fischer for a tap-in from the edge of the crease.
Henrique tied it 1-1 at 14:21 with a one-timer from the slot after Strome stole the puck from Josh Brown along the boards two seconds after a Ducks power play ended.
"I thought we were controlling the play, but we kept turning the puck over. … You can't keep giving them 2-on-1s, 3-on-1s, 4-on-1s," Fischer said.
Lawson Crouse restored the Coyotes lead at 6:33 of the second period with a redirect on a power play from the low slot to make it 2-1, and Keller pushed it to 3-1 at 9:06 with a one-timer stick side from the right circle.

Strome cut it to 3-2 at 12:01, scoring after a seam pass by Derek Grant deflected off the stick of Jones to him at the far post.
Henrique tied it 3-3 at 5:46 of the third on a power play, scoring on a tap pass from the goal line by Strome.
"He's just been a great leader for us, even when times are tough this year, he's been a real calming presence," Strome said. "He brings the same attitude and work ethic day in and day out, and that's really infectious for our young guys."
Eriksson Ek, who was recalled on an emergency basis from San Diego of the American Hockey League on Friday, allowed three goals on 18 shots in the first two periods before stopping 17 of 18 in the third.
"I thought he settled in there really well," Eakins said. "He should be proud of his performance. … To be the next man up is a tough situation sometimes. Your dream is always to play that first NHL game and then when it comes, you can be a little jittery."
NOTES:Ducks goalie John Gibson missed his second straight game due to illness, and forward Troy Terry did not make the trip for the birth of his child. Terry is expected to play Sunday against the Colorado Avalanche. … Prosvetov allowed 15 goals in his previous two starts. … Former Calgary Flames defenseman Dennis Wideman held the previous time-on-ice record of 38:05 set on Jan. 18, 2014.
