RALEIGH, N.C. -- Ryan Getzlaf scored 1:15 into overtime to give the Anaheim Ducks a 2-1 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at PNC Arena on Friday.
Getzlaf took a stretch pass from Hampus Lindholm and lifted a shot over Curtis McElhinney's glove on a breakaway. "As soon as you get a step on someone, it's really dangerous," said Lindholm, who missed the previous six games with a lower-body injury. "I saw him take a few horse steps and he got ahead of (the defender), so it's nice to see him put it in." WATCH: [All Ducks vs. Hurricanes highlights] Pontus Aberg tied it with 3:50 left in the third period; and John Gibson, who played his 200th NHL game, made 33 saves for the Ducks (13-9-5), who have won five of six.

McElhinney made 27 saves for the Hurricanes (12-9-4). "A couple of guys I wasn't happy with, they didn't come to the party," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "But for the most part, our defense really battled in our end and our goalie was good again tonight." Andrei Svechnikov gave Carolina a 1-0 lead with 1:03 remaining in the first period. His wrist shot from above the right circle beat Gibson through the five hole for a 4-on-4 goal. The Hurricanes outshot the Ducks 21-6 in the period.

"We were overwhelmed in the first period," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "We were slow and there was one puck and they wouldn't give it to us. Luckily enough, our goaltender stood on his head." Aberg tied it 1-1 when he batted the puck out of the air and over McElhinney's shoulder. The Hurricanes were 0-for-6 on the power play. "We had a chance with the power play a couple times but we didn't get anything going," Carolina defenseman Justin Faulk said. "It's on us. We had a great chance there with the power plays to get another one and finish them off." Gibson made several big saves. In the first period, he stopped Warren Foegele on a breakaway, then used his blocker on Jordan Martinook's follow-up. He made a right-skate save on Dougie Hamilton's breakaway with two minutes remaining in the period, and in the third period stopped Phillip Di Giuseppe with a glove save on a backhand.

"That's about as best as I've seen, when you're talking about the quality of scoring chances we gave up," Getzlaf said. "The two breakaways, he made big stops for us. He's been doing it all year. It's not surprising to us. We definitely don't want to rely on him that much going down the road."
They said it
"We've had a knack for finding ways to come back and winning some games we thought we were out of and maybe shouldn't have won. It's says a lot about the character of our team that we can overcome rough patches and still be able to hold on and find ways to win." -- Ducks goalie John Gibson

"[Getzlaf] is a skilled player, he can make things happen. Obviously a nice play to get it up over my glove. You've got to stick to your guy. They made a great play, and he picked up a great pass." -- Hurricanes goalie Curtis McElhinney
