Ruggiero played four seasons at Harvard University, including serving as captain for two seasons (2002-04). She won the Patty Kazmaier Award as the top women's player in collegiate hockey in 2003-04 when she had 55 points (25 goals, 30 assists) in 32 games, and was a finalist in each of her three other seasons. Ruggiero helped Harvard win the NCAA women's ice hockey championship in 1999, and finish as runner-up in 2003 and 2004.

After retiring, she became a member of the International Olympic Committee until 2018, during which time she presented Olympic gold medals to the U.S. women's soccer team (2012 London), the U.S. women's basketball team (2016 Rio de Janeiro) and the U.S. women's hockey team (2018 PyeongChang).
