Coyotes end nine-game losing streak to Rangers

NEW YORK -- Derek Stepan scored with 32 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Arizona Coyotes a 4-3 come-from-behind win against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Friday.

Stepan, who scored with a glove-side wrist shot, played 515 games in seven seasons with the Rangers from 2010-17. He hadn't scored an overtime goal since Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Second Round against the Washington Capitals at the Garden on May 13, 2015.
"I'd be lying to you if I told you that it didn't feel good," Stepan said. "You know, when you wake up in the morning you think, 'What would be the best outcome for me?' How about an overtime goal?"

The Coyotes (14-15-2) ended a four-game losing streak and a nine-game losing streak against the Rangers that dated to March 24, 2014.
Arizona trailed 3-0 in the second period but got goals from Jordan Oesterle, Josh Archibald and Oliver Ekman-Larsson. Adin Hill made 27 saves.
"We just said, 'Keep going, keep going, we're going to get chances,' " Ekman-Larsson said. "That's what happened. It's obviously nice to get a comeback win here. I think that means a lot for the team."

New York (14-13-4) scored a season-high three power-play goals, from Pavel Buchnevich, Kevin Hayes and Mika Zibanejad. Henrik Lundqvist made 30 saves.
The Rangers are 2-5-2 in their past nine games. They have blown multigoal leads in four of those, including a 4-3 shootout loss to the Winnipeg Jets on Dec. 2, and a 5-3 loss to the Washington Capitals on Nov. 24.
"We were just talking about go back to the Dallas game," Rangers coach David Quinn said, referencing New York's 2-1 win against the Dallas Stars on Nov. 19. "We score early in the third. It's [2-1]. We stay on them and on them and on them, and we never stop. We just kept playing. We didn't let the score dictate. We didn't play scared. And that's what we're doing right now.
"Maybe because we're going through this tough time we're not confident enough, but we've got to get out of it in a hurry. You can't have a three-goal lead and a 3-1 lead going into the third period and do what we did."

Oesterle started the comeback with a power-play goal at 10:42 of the second period, a one-timer from the point to make it 3-1.
The Coyotes killed off a 5-on-3 for 1:40 to keep it a two-goal margin going into the third period.
"They score there and pretty well [that's a] fork in it," Arizona coach Rick Tocchet said. "We killed it off and it gave us some belief."
Archibald made it 3-2 at 13:11 of the third, scoring from the slot off a pass from Stepan.
Ekman-Larsson tied it 3-3 at 16:59 when his slap shot from the left side hit off the right post and bounced into the net.
Lundqvist stopped Clayton Keller on a breakaway with 1:18 remaining in overtime, but Stepan beat him with a slap shot to end it.

"We've got a young group of guys and we've tried to embed it into their brain that no matter what happens you stay even-keeled and you keep playing the game and sticking with your structure," Stepan said. "We did a real, real strong job of that tonight."
The Rangers had a 3-0 lead in the first 25:48.
Buchnevich, who returned after missing 13 games with a broken thumb, gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead at 4:01 of the first period, a one-timer from the right circle off a pass from Filip Chytil.
Hayes made it 2-0 at 17:26 when he redirected a pass from Mats Zuccarello over Hill's right pad.
Zibanejad extended the lead to 3-0 at 5:48 of the second with a wrist shot from the top of the left circle.
"It's tough to accept this one," Lundqvist said. "It was a game that was right there for us."

Hayes crashed into the end boards with his backside first with 3:23 remaining in the third period but Quinn said he thinks Hayes will be fine. ... Zuccarello played 22:30 after missing seven games, and 13 of the past 15 since Nov. 9, with a groin injury. … Hayes has six points (three goals, three assists) in a three-game point streak. … The Coyotes became the last team in the NHL to win when trailing after the first period this season (1-8-1). … Keller has nine points (two goals, seven assists) in his past eight games.
