With the NHL free agent signing period having begun, there are several teams in need of a defenseman who can play top-four minutes or provide leadership in a third-pair role.
NHL.com takes a closer look at the top unrestricted free agent defensemen (listed in alphabetical order):

Justin Braun, New York Rangers
Braun played 69 games with the Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers this season, scoring 18 points (six goals, 12 assists) and averaging 19:33 of ice time per game. The 35-year-old had 87 hits and 121 blocked shots and would provide any team with a good second- or third-pair defenseman. Braun has 197 points (34 goals, 163 assists) in 791 regular-season games for the Rangers, Flyers and San Jose Sharks and 16 points (three goals, 13 assists) in 119 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Zdeno Chara, New York Islanders
The oldest player in the NHL, Chara proved he could still play at a high level at age 45, averaging 18:44 of ice time in 72 games this season. He had 14 points (two goals, 12 assists) to go along with 125 hits and 90 blocked shots and was a mentor to New York's young defensemen, including Noah Dobson. Chara has played the most NHL games by a defenseman (1,680) and has 680 points (209 goals, 471 assists) in 24 seasons with the Islanders, Washington Capitals, Boston Bruins and Ottawa Senators. Chara has 70 points (18 goals, 52 assists) in 200 playoff games and won the Cup with the Bruins in 2011.
John Klingberg, Dallas Stars
Klingberg previously expressed his desire to remain with the Stars but likely will end up somewhere else after the sides have yet to agree on a contract. He had 47 points (six goals, 41 assists) in 74 regular-season games and one assist in seven playoff games this season. The 29-year-old averaged 22:13 of ice time per game and can anchor a power play (20 power-play points this season). He has 374 points (71 goals, 303 assists) in 552 regular-season games and 35 points (seven goals, 28 assists) in 59 playoff games.
P.K. Subban, New Jersey Devils
While Subban isn't the point-scoring machine he was in the past, he can still contribute on the ice. The 33-year-old had 22 points (five goals, 17 assists) in 77 games this season. Subban has 467 points (115 goals, 352 assists) in 834 games for the Canadiens, Nashville Predators and Devils and 62 points (18 goals, 44 assists) in 96 playoff games.
Keith Yandle, Philadelphia Flyers
There's no questioning his toughness, as Yandle played an NHL record 989 consecutive games before he was a healthy scratch this season, when he had 19 points (one goal, 18 assists) in 77 games. The 35-year-old has 619 points (103 goals, 516 assists) in 1,109 regular-season games for the Flyers, Panthers, Rangers and Arizona Coyotes and 36 points (six goals, 30 assists) in 58 playoff games.
