The Black Girl Hockey Club has awarded $29,000 in summer scholarships to nine players as part of its ongoing effort to make the sport more accessible to women of color.

One recipient was awarded a $5,000 scholarship and eight others each received $3,000.
The players were selected based on their responses to two essay questions that asked them how the scholarship would assist their hockey careers and how they would align themselves with BGHC's mission of making hockey a more inclusive sport for Black women and girls.
BGHC, a nonprofit organization, was founded by Renee Hess in 2018 to "inspire and sustain passion" for hockey within the Black community, and specifically among Black women in the community.
The proceeds for the awards come from the BGHC Scholarship Fund, which includes an $11,000 donation from the One Roof Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Seattle Kraken and Climate Pledge Arena.
