The injury occurred during the first period of the game when Jones was tied up with Blues forward Patrik Berglund.
"Just a weird play," Jones told the Columbus Dispatch. "First period, in front of the net. Berglund and I got tied up and the back of his skate blade came down hard on top of my foot. It was a really weird play.
"It went through the tongue [of my skate] and my sock. I didn't want to take [the skate] off between periods because I knew the swelling would build up and I wouldn't be able to get my skate back on."
He stayed in the game and played a Blue Jackets-high 26:19.
"I'm very disappointed for him," Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella told the newspaper. "Injuries are part of this game. It's huge a loss for us; I'm not going to say it isn't. But this happens.
"It's for him that it bothers me the most because I think he has really ... his mental approach has improved [so] much from the first time I met him last year to where he is right now."
The Blue Jackets have been carrying eight defenseman, meaning Dalton Prout or Scott Harrington will be in the lineup when the Blue Jackets play the Anaheim Ducks at Nationwide Arena on Wednesday (7 p.m. ET; FS-O, PRIME, NHL.TV). Prout has one shot on goal in five games and last played Oct. 28. Harrington has yet to play this season.
"All of us are going to have to step up," defenseman Zach Werenski said. "Seth logs a lot of minutes for us in every situation. All six [defensemen] that get in will have to step up and play a bigger role. It's big shoes to fill, trying to fill a role like that. But the guys we have here are capable of stepping up."
The No. 4 pick of the 2013 NHL Draft by the Nashville Predators, Jones was acquired by the Blue Jackets in a trade for forward Ryan Johansen on Jan. 6. He has five goals and 26 points in 51 games with Columbus, and 20 goals and 89 points in 250 NHL games.
