Marchand Celebrates BOS-DET

Brad Marchand scored 35 seconds into overtime to give the Boston Bruins a 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Monday.

Boston got a 2-on-1 after Detroit forward Gustav Nyquist fell in the Bruins' zone. Marchand outwaited goalie Jimmy Howard before flipping a backhand shot into the net.
Marchand had an assist on David Pastrnak's tying goal with 1:26 left in the third period.

"This shows you what kind of character we have on this team," Marchand said. "We've been stepping up to win games, and that's what you need to have a good team."
The Red Wings are 0-6 this season in games decided in overtime, including a 2-1 loss to the Florida Panthers on Monday.
"We've looked at everything in great depth, but the key in overtime is that you have to make offensive and defensive plays and we haven't done that," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "I never expected we would be 0-6."

The Red Wings led 2-1 with 2:32 remaining in the third period, but the Bruins added an extra attacker after Detroit iced the puck. Pastrnak tied it by one-timing Marchand's pass through a crowd in the slot.
"I saw [Pastrnak], but it is tough to get a pass through that many sticks," Marchand said. "Maybe it works one time out of 10 or one out of 20, but that one got through."
Pastrnak almost missed the opportunity.
"The last time I saw [Marchand], he was rushing down the wall, so I thought he was going to shoot," Pastrnak said. "I only saw the puck at the last second, but I was able to shoot it."
Noel Acciari scored for Boston (15-9-4), which has won three in a row and is 9-2-0 in its past 11 games. Tuukka Rask made 31 saves and has won five straight starts.

"We've been able to dig ourselves out of a lot of holes this year," said Bruins defenseman Torey Krug, who had the assist on Marchand's goal. "They played a really good defensive game, and we knew we had to do a better job in front of our net."
Tomas Tatar and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit (11-13-7), which lost for the 10th time in 11 games (1-5-5). Howard made 29 saves.

"I think we're trying to do the right things, and we did a lot of good things tonight," Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "We're just finding ways to lose."
The Bruins had a season-low two shots on goal in the first period, the last with 18:17 left.
"We've had a tendency to play down to our competition lately," Boston coach Bruce Cassidy said. "That's dangerous, because Detroit is a better team than their record. But we got it going eventually."
Tatar gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead on a power play at 9:15 of the second period, scoring 13 seconds after Patrice Bergeron's tripping penalty. Tatar's wrist shot from the left face-off dot beat Rask, who was screened by Justin Abdelkader.
Acciari tied it 1-1 at 3:02 of the third period, beating Niklas Kronwall to a rebound to score his second goal of the season.
Larkin gave the Red Wings the lead at 11:34, taking a pass from Darren Helm and scoring on a shorthanded breakaway. Larkin has two of his three NHL shorthanded goals this season.
