Jaromir Jagr gets 1,888th point in Panthers loss

SUNRISE, Fla. -- Jaromir Jagr moved past Mark Messier into second place on the NHL all-time scoring list with an assist for the Florida Panthers in a 3-1 loss to the Boston Bruins at BB&T Center on Thursday.
It was the 1,888th point of his NHL career.
The 44-year-old right wing was camped in front of the net when defenseman Mike Matheson shot from the point. The puck hit Jagr and ricocheted into the right circle, and with Bruins goaltender Tuukka Rask down, center Aleksander Barkov scored with 6:40 left in the third period to make it 2-1.

With officials reviewing the play to confirm the assist, Jagr thumped his chest and gave the fans a thumbs-up while receiving a standing ovation. When it was official, the Panthers presented him with a gold stick. Only Wayne Gretzky (2,857) has more points in almost 100 years of the NHL.
"I was dreaming about something else," Jagr said. "I thought I was going to score beautiful goal, beautiful assist, and we're going to win the hockey game. Obviously, it didn't go the way I wanted it to go, but the best thing is just to put it behind us and the whole team should concentrate on winning the games. We didn't play very well today."

Frank Vatrano, Patrice Bergeron and David Backes scored for the Bruins (18-14-3), who are 3-0-0 against the Panthers (15-14-5) this season. Rask made 29 saves.
Panthers coach Tom Rowe said Jagr set an example.
"He's upset," Rowe said. "He's second in the history of the National Hockey League scoring, and he probably doesn't even care about that now. The two points were a lot more important to him, and that's what a lot of our young guys have got to take from it.
"And then they've got to watch how he worked in the game tonight. He did all the little things you're supposed to be doing. He made plays. He went to the net. He played a simple game. That's what all of our guys have got to learn from."

Barkov was muted, but the 21-year-old knows one day he will be proud of this historic moment.
"Right now, we lose the game, and it was huge game for us," Barkov said. "It doesn't feel that good. But in 20 years, you're not going to remember who you played against or if you won or not. You will remember that you were part of it. Of course he said he wanted to score a nice goal, but … I'm sorry, Jags."

Goal of the game

Bergeron scored what turned out to be the winner on the power play at 5:13 of the second period, taking a wrist shot from the high slot. The goal was his first in 10 games, second in 17.

Save of the game

Rask used his glove to stop Barkov in close at 6:20 of the second period with Florida on a power play. He didn't allow a rebound with Jagr lurking in front. That preserved a 2-0 lead.

Unsung performance of the game

Bruins defenseman Torey Krug also helped preserve a 2-0 lead in the second. Panthers forward Jonathan Marchessault tried to stuff in the puck. Rask stopped him, the puck fluttered in the air, and Krug batted it away with Panthers forward Vincent Trocheck nearby.

Highlight of the game

During a Bruins power play in the first period, David Krejci passed the puck from the left wing to the right faceoff circle. Austin Czarnik passed across to the left of the net for Backes, who sent the puck underneath Panthers goaltender James Reimer in the splits. The puck skidded through the crease right to Czarnik, who shot the puck into Reimer's pads. Krejci tried to score on the rebound, but Reimer stopped him.

Vatrano scored in his first game of the season. He had foot surgery Sept. 26. He scored two goals in two games with Providence of the American Hockey League before he was called up. … Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo is scheduled to start against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday. He is tied with Terry Sawchuk for fifth in NHL wins (447). Sawchuk earned 351 of his wins with the Red Wings.
