Tuukka Rask

MONTREAL -- Boston Bruins goalie Tuukka Rask lost another shutout bid late in a game, but he earned the win in a goaltending duel against Carey Price of the Montreal Canadiens at Bell Centre on Monday.
Ryan Spooner scored with 1:40 remaining in overtime to give the Bruins a 2-1 victory. He shot past Price after taking a return pass from defenseman Torey Krug.
"It was a great pass, and then when I came in, I was going to go backhand and I saw that he was playing deep, so I just tried to fake a shot, and it was good," Spooner said.
Rookie Austin Czarnik scored on his 24th birthday, and Rask made 30 saves for Boston (16-12-2), which ended a three-game losing streak (0-2-1).

"It was a duel of two of obviously the best goaltenders around, so it was nice to see Rask] win this duel and stand tall for us," Bruins coach Claude Julien said. "The other guy did the same thing for his team, so that's why it was a close game. Both goaltenders were great, and at the end, you know, I'd like to say ours was better."

Montreal's Paul Byron scored his 10th goal with 3:12 remaining in the third period to tie the game 1-1. It was the fifth time this season Rask has lost a shutout with 5:00 or less remaining in the third.
"Nothing you can do about it, really," Rask said. "I just try to battle and tough bounces happen."
Price made 27 saves for the Canadiens (19-6-4), who outscored their opponents 15-3 while winning the first two of a four-game homestand. Montreal, which is 14-1-2 at home, had its highest-scoring game in 26 years in a 10-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday.
"I think everybody in the building appreciated the intensity and speed of the game," Price said. "I thought it was exciting at both ends."

Czarnik scored his third goal with 1:05 left in the second period to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead. He elected to shoot from the left side just after a delayed penalty was signaled against the Canadiens.
Rask stacked his right pad to make a sensational save on Tomas Plekanec at 9:38 of the second. Canadiens right wing Brendan Gallagher passed on a 2-on-1 to set up Plekanec's scoring opportunity right after Bruins forward David Pastrnak one-timed a slap shot off the left post.

Goal of the game

The Canadiens lost at home for the third time this season, though they still have one regulation loss at Bell Centre after Byron's third-period goal helped them earn a point.

Save of the game

Rask's instincts took over when he came up with a two-pad stack to stop Plekanec's shot in the second period. "Well, you've got to keep some old school in your game, but I'm probably going to get clipped on a video from our goalie coach because I was late or something," Rask said. "But it was a good save. That's the only way you make highlights nowadays."

Highlight of the game

Czarnik got his second point with an assist on Spooner's goal, though he didn't see it. "I made a good play and I went to go change, and then they scored," said Czarnik, whose second-period goal was set up by Spooner and defenseman Adam McQuaid. "So it was a great play by them, whatever they did."

Unsung moment of the game

Bruins forward Brad Marchand gave his stick to defenseman Brandon Carlo, whose stick broke while Boston was killing a penalty to Krug in the second period. Marchand then stuck like glue to Shea Weber on the point, following the Montreal defenseman right out to the blue line.

They said it

"I thought it was a great effort. Obviously, we gave them a point with 3:00 left, but at the same time we showed some character staying with it and having some good chances in overtime, and finally putting it in." -- Bruins center Patrice Bergeron
"They have a good penalty kill over there, they have for a long time. They've got some big bodies to break up plays. But we didn't do a good enough job executing and outworking the penalty-killers. I think we got outworked tonight, and that's something that's very fixable. That's the frustrating part about it." -- Canadiens right wing Brendan Gallagher
"There was not a lot of space on the ice for both teams. Both teams got some good scoring chances, both goalies played really well. When you get to the overtime, you're almost flipping (for) the point. We got two guys that got caught late a little bit on the ice (for) too long, and it was tough for us to check because we were there for such a long time." -- Canadiens coach Michel Therrien on the Bruins' overtime goal

Need to know

Montreal went 0-for-5 on the power play, and Boston has killed 17 straight penalties. ... The Bruins had a goal by David Krejci disallowed 1:00 into overtime. A video review upheld the referee's ruling that Pastrnak interfered with Price before Krejci shot the puck into the net.
