The 34-year-old goalie was shut down before the break for the 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend because of a lower-body injury.
"He's not on the ice today," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said Monday. "He won't be practicing this week, so we'll update at the end of the week or early next week. That's where he's at right now. We'll see how it goes from there.
"He's the one fighting through some ... I don't know if it's medical issues, body issues for his age with the comeback. We'll see how it turns out."
Rask is 2-2-0 with a 4.28 goals-against average and .844 save percentage in four games this season. He had surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip in late July; signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Bruins on Jan. 11; and made 25 saves in his season debut, a 3-2 win against the Philadelphia Flyers two days later, his first NHL game since June 9.
In his most recent game (Jan. 24), Rask allowed five goals on 27 shots, a 5-3 loss to the Anaheim Ducks.
Goalie Jeremy Swayman will start for the Bruins against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday (7 p.m. ET; SN1, TVAS, NESN, ATTSN-PT, ESPN+, NHL LIVE). It will be his first NHL start since Jan. 6, a 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild. Swayman was reassigned to Providence of the American Hockey League to make room for Rask on Boston's roster. He made 12 saves in relief of Linus Ullmark during a 6-1 loss to the Dallas Stars on Jan. 30.
Swayman was 3-2-0 with a 2.18 GAA and .911 save percentage in five AHL games. He was 8-6-2 with a 2.31 GAA, .916 save percentage and one shutout in 17 games with the Bruins.
"I think it was more of an opportunity to get better mentally physically, working on my game," Swayman said. "I don't want to make it a negative thing at all. I think there were a lot of positives that came out of it and I'm just happy to be back with the team."
