The Pittsburgh Penguins will be the opponent for the Boston Bruins in the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic at Fenway Park in Boston on Jan. 2.

Fenway Park was revealed as the host venue with the Bruins the home team for the next Winter Classic during NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman's press conference at the 2022 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend in Las Vegas on Feb. 4. Neither an opponent nor a date was announced at that time.
"I have all kind of memories of going to Fenway Park," said Penguins coach Mike Sullivan, who grew up in Massachusetts. "I've grown up being a huge baseball fan, as was my dad. We watched the Red Sox all the time in my house. To have an opportunity to participate in a hockey game at Fenway Park, for me, is a thrill of a lifetime. I can't put it into words how excited I am for that opportunity. It's a special place, you know? It's really a unique ballpark. The history, I think, is well-chronicled. It speaks for itself. But being a Boston kid, born and raised there, and being such a big Red Sox fan, for me, it would be a huge thrill."
The game will be televised exclusively on TNT in the United States and on Sportsnet and TVA Sports in Canada. No start time was announced.
This is the second straight year that Discover is the title sponsor for the Winter Classic.
It's the first time the game will return to a previous venue; the 2010 Winter Classic was played at Fenway Park, with the Bruins defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 2-1 in overtime.
The Penguins will play their third Winter Classic and sixth NHL outdoor game. They lost 4-3 in overtime to the Flyers in the 2019 NHL Stadium Series at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Feb. 23, 2019, defeated the Flyers 4-2 in the 2017 Stadium Series at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh on Feb. 25, 2017, and lost 5-1 to the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2014 Stadium Series at Soldier Field in Chicago on March 1, 2014 and 3-1 to the Washington Capitals in the 2011 Winter Classic at Heinz Field on Jan. 1, 2011.
Pittsburgh defeated the Buffalo Sabres 2-1 in a shootout in the inaugural Winter Classic at Ralph Wilson Stadium, in Orchard Park, New York on Jan. 1, 2008.
Current Penguins forwards Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, and defenseman Kris Letang all played in the first Winter Classic.
The Bruins will play their fifth NHL outdoor game and fourth Winter Classic. They lost 5-1 to the Montreal Canadiens in the 2016 Winter Classic at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts on Jan. 1, 2016, and defeated the Blackhawks 4-2 in the 2019 Winter Classic at Notre Dame Stadium on Jan. 1, 2019 and the Flyers 7-3 in the 2021 NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe at Edgewood Tahoe Resort in Stateline, Nevada on Feb. 21, 2021.
The 2023 Winter Classic will be the 36th outdoor NHL game since the Heritage Classic at Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton on Nov. 22, 2003, when the Canadiens defeated the Edmonton Oilers 4-3.
The Penguins are principally owned by Fenway Sports Group, which also owns Fenway Park and its main tenant, the Boston Red Sox of Major League Baseball.
