Brandon Tanev propels Jets past Red Wings

DETROIT-- Brandon Tanev will never forget his first two NHL goals. He scored twice in the third period to give the Winnipeg Jets a 5-3 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena on Friday.
Tanev tied the game 3-3 with 7:36 left in the third period, and then made it 4-3 on a breakaway with 1:16 to go.

"The atmosphere here in the building, first time playing in Joe Louis and obviously scoring my first goal, was something incredible, something I'll remember for a long time," Tanev said.
Tanev, 24, was an undrafted free agent the Jets signed out of Providence College on March 30. He had one assist in 14 NHL games.

"To get two and to have them be the difference in such an important game, it's a good payoff for him," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "I hope he takes all the confidence in the world from it that he can make those plays, and that'll be the key for Brandon. If he can play that game and have a bit of finish to his game, I mean, that was a great signing for us."
The Jets trailed 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2 against the Red Wings, a day after coming back from trailing 3-0 and earning one point in a 4-3 overtime loss at the Washington Capitals. Winnipeg was trailing entering the third period for the 10th time in 12 games and won for the third time. The Jets did it Friday missing seven regulars from the lineup because of injuries.
"Just watching the way those guys played with each other, that's as much fun as I've had behind the bench in a long time," Maurice said. "It was a great win, a great, great win."
Patrik Laine, Mark Scheifele and Nikolaj Ehlers scored for the Jets (5-6-1), who won for the first time in four games. Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves.

Luke Glendening, Henrik Zetterberg and Justin Abdelkader scored for the Red Wings (6-5-1), who are 0-3-1 in their past four games.
Glendening gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead 3:04 into the first period. Laine tied it 1-1 at 15:30.
Zetterberg gave the Red Wings a 2-1 lead 9:40 into the second period when he hit a puck out of midair with his stick blade. The call on the ice was no goal, but after the officials huddled, it was changed to a goal. Video review supported the call that Zetterberg's stick made contact with the puck at or below the level of the crossbar.

The Jets tied it 2-2 after a video review 2:01 into the third period. Scheifele shot the puck off the left post and then jammed at the rebound. Mrazek fell backward and covered the puck, and video showed the puck peeking out under Mrazek's back completely across the goal line.
Abdelkader gave the Red Wings a 3-2 lead 10:48 into the third.

"I think if we get in that situation we know it's not over until it's over," Scheifele said. "We've got the character and the heart in this room that we can pull a comeback."

Goal of the game

Tanev took a pass from Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien in the neutral zone, broke away behind Red Wings defenseman Jonathan Ericsson and scored the game-winner.

Hellebuyck used his blocker to stop Darren Helm on a breakaway about five minutes into the first period, keeping the Red Wings from taking a 2-0 lead.

Highlight of the game

Tanev's first goal came so quickly the officials didn't realize it went in. The puck came off the end boards, Ehlers passed it in front, and Tanev shot it past the left shoulder of goaltender Petr Mrazek. It went under the crossbar and out. Play continued, but NHL Hockey Operations saw the goal on video and sounded the horn.

Unsung moment of the game

Jets forward Kyle Connor tied up the stick of Red Wings forward Tomas Tatar in front of the Winnipeg net with about 2:30 to go in the third period, preventing a shot and scoring chance with the game tied 3-3.

He leads NHL rookies and is tied for the League lead with Artem Anisimov of the Chicago Blackhawks and Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning. … Ehlers had an NHL career-high four points (one goal, three assists). … Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall returned from a knee injury and made his season debut. He was minus-1 with two shots and a blocked shot in 18:14.
