What sight could have been so beautiful it brought a tough-as-nails veteran of 11 NHL seasons to tears?
For Louie DeBrusk, it was seeing his son score a goal in his NHL debut on Thursday night. Jake DeBrusk was making his NHL debut for the Boston Bruins with his family watching in the stands. With 5:48 remaining in the second period, DeBrusk took a pretty touch pass from David Krejci and beat Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne for his first NHL goal. His dad lost it. An ear-to-ear smile crossed the face of Louie DeBrusk, a man who once racked up 205 penalty minutes in a season with the Edmonton Oilers.
After the family finally sat down in their seats, the elder DeBrusk couldn't help himself as television cameras caught him wiping away a few tears of joy. It was reminiscent of Ema Matthews' reaction when her son Auston scored four goals in his first NHL game to start last season. Who could blame the proud papa? But while we are on the subject of Bruins fathers getting emotional while witnessing their son's first NHL goal, lets not leave out Charlie McAvoy's father, Charlie Sr., who also had a great reaction after seeing his boy light the lamp. It was a big night for the young Bruins and the fathers simply couldn't hold it in. Who could possibly blame them?
