Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane left their season-opening 4-1 loss to the Montreal Canadiens in the second period with an injury Thursday.

Kane was helped off the ice with 12 seconds remaining in the period after he fell into the end boards while pursuing the puck with Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin. Kane went into the boards on his back, left side first.
He was taken to the hospital for evaluation and precautionary measures, the Sabres said.
"I don't have [an update] further than he was sent to the hospital for further evaluation," Sabres coach Dan Bylsma said. "Obviously, he went into the boards hard and you saw the discomfort and pain he was in. But there's really not more I can tell you other than that he's getting checked out at the hospital."
Kane played 12:43 through the first two periods and had three shots on goal. He had 20 goals and 35 points last season with the Sabres.
The Sabres were playing without center Jack Eichel, who sustained a high ankle sprain at practice Wednesday and is expected to be out 6-8 weeks, and forward Kyle Okposo, who was scratched with a knee injury.
