Lightning defeat Capitals in overtime, hold Ovechkin scoreless

TAMPA -- Brayden Point scored with 1:52 remaining in overtime, and the Tampa Bay Lightning held Alex Ovechkin scoreless in a 4-3 victory against the Washington Capitals at Amalie Arena on Monday.
Ovechkin scored a hat trick in each of the first two games of the season, but didn't score a point, taking four shots on goal. He did not speak to the media after the game.

Ovechkin was trying to become the first NHL player to score a hat trick in three consecutive games. His best opportunity came on a power play when he put a wrist shot on goal that was turned away by Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy.

Ovechkin, who has seven goals, also was trying to break a 100-year-old record of goals scored by a player in the first three games of the season. The record of nine was set in 1917-18, the first NHL season, by Reg Noble of the Toronto Arenas and Joe Malone of the Montreal Canadiens.
Point beat goaltender Philipp Grubauer off a tip from a shot by Nikita Kucherov on a 4-on-3 power play after the Capitals were called for too many men on the ice.
"He's had a great start for us," Lightning forward Alex Killorn said. "From playing with him last year and at the World Championship you can tell he's a great talent. He never makes any mistakes. He is one of those reliable guys and he makes huge plays at big times in the game."
Killorn, Chris Kunitz and Kucherov also scored for the Lightning (2-1-0) while Vasilevskiy made 23 saves.

T.J. Oshie had two goals and an assist while Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and two assists for the Capitals (2-0-1). Grubauer made 36 saves.
Oshie scored each of his goals on the power play. He gave Washington a 2-0 lead at 18:05 of the first period when he scored on a deflection of a slap shot from John Carlson. Backstrom also had an assist.
His second goal came at 7:49 of the second period after Lightning forward Yanni Gourde was called for a face-off violation. Oshie sent a shot from the high slot that beat Vasilevskiy to give the Capitals a 3-1 lead.

"We didn't do a great job of playing 200-foot hockey," Oshie said. "Once we got the lead it's almost like we sat back and almost played a little too passive. [Grubauer] held them off for as long as he could back there. He had a great night."
Tampa Bay made it 3-2 at 18:09 on Kunitz's first goal with the Lightning, a deflection off a shot from defenseman Anton Stralman that beat Grubauer to the far post.
Kucherov tied the game 3-3 at 10:46 of the third period when he sent a backhand shot past Grubauer, beating him high on the glove side.
"I think those first two games against Florida [Panthers] were tough for us," Kucherov said. "We got those games out of the way and now can start playing our way."
Backstrom gave the Capitals a 1-0 lead at 16:42 of the first period when he scored off a rebound of a shot from forward Andre Burakovsky.

"We had a couple of chances to make it 4-1," Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. "We didn't and they chipped away and there was too much time on the clock."
Killorn brought the Lightning within 2-1 at 5:28 of the second period on a shot from the high slot off a feed from Point.

Kucherov was able to get the edge on Capitals defender Taylor Chorney and flip the puck over Grubauer.

Save of the game

Grubauer denied Tyler Johnson from close range with a pad save, and followed up with a diving stop on Ondrej Palat with 2:29 left in overtime.

Highlight of the game

Point was camped out in front of the net as Kucherov ripped a shot from the left circle that he was able to deflect past Grubauer high on the glove side.
