Husso, Red Wings hold off Golden Knights, end 3-game skid

LAS VEGAS -- Ville Husso made 33 saves, and the Detroit Red Wings held on for a 3-2 victory against the Vegas Golden Knights at T-Mobile Arena on Thursday.

It was Husso's first win against the Golden Knights, having gone 0-4-1 in his previous five starts.
"I don't think we gave easy offense for them and kept them outside," Husso said. "Unfortunately, they got a lucky bounce at the end. Overall, it was a good effort. … There were a couple of shots from the blue line, and I saw all of those. Guys boxed out well. It was not an easy night, but it was one of the nicer nights to play as a goalie."
Lucas Raymond, Dominik Kubalik, and Joe Veleno scored for Detroit (19-17-8), which ended a three-game skid (0-2-1).
"Great disciplined game from our guys," Detroit coach Derek Lalonde said. "Literally over 60 minutes, we gave them nothing to get going. Getting results was important. We just managed our game better. It can be a frustrating group at times because you see moments of us playing extremely well and for a majority of the time, and just finding ways to not manage our game correctly and not get results. Tonight, we were good from start to finish and got results. Something like this can certainly build confidence."

Alex Pietrangelo and William Karlsson scored for Vegas (28-16-2), which has lost three in a row for the first time this season. Adin Hill made 22 saves.
"Our effort needs to be better in certain areas of the ice. Eventually, we got to it tonight," Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. "We've had passengers lately. Guys we rely on can be better. Timely saves could have made a difference.
"I wouldn't put it on one element. We're getting outworked in key situations. Key times of the games. Put us in bad spots. We need better from some of the players we rely on."
Karlsson scored to make it 3-2 with 43 seconds left in the third period when Jack Eichel's pass ricocheted in off his skate with Hill pulled for an extra attacker. But Vegas couldn't score again in the frantic final seconds.
"We obviously played a good 60 minutes," Veleno said. "We stuck to our game plan all game. We were able to grind it out at the end, even though they had some extended [offensive]-zone time. We found a way to stick in there and battle through. Block some shots and kind of hang out there."
Raymond gave the Red Wings a 1-0 lead at 2:45 of the first period, one-timing a centering pass from Dylan Larkin off of a Nicolas Roy turnover. It marked the fifth straight game that Vegas allowed the first goal.
"It goes to effort," Cassidy said. "Be ready to play, have some awareness, and second effort to keep the puck out of your net if you do make a mistake. Nobody's perfect. That's a problem with our starts."
Pietrangelo tied it 1-1 with a slap shot from above the left face-off circle at 19:23.
Kubalik gave Detroit a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at 2:37 of the second period from the top of the right circle after a cross-ice pass from Oskar Sundqvist.

Veleno made it 3-1 at 10:25, roofing a wrist shot on the rush.
"I wanted to push the pace and I was in full speed. I was able to beat one of their [defensemen] and their other [defensemen] had to play our wide guy," Veleno said. "I was just able to get it on and off my stick pretty quick and put it in the back of the net."
NOTES: Detroit forward Tyler Bertuzzi left the game with a lower-body injury in the third period. "I don't expect it to be [long term]," Lalonde said. "It's one of those tweaks." … Larkin has eight points (two goals, six assists) on a six-game point streak. ... Golden Knights forward Reilly Smith had two assists and was plus-2.
