Johnson, Blue Jackets end Oilers' 6-game winning streak in OT

EDMONTON -- Kent Johnson scored at 2:29 of overtime to give the Columbus Blue Jackets a 3-2 come-from-behind win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Wednesday.

The rookie center scored on shot from the slot in the 3-on-3 overtime to end Edmonton's six-game winning streak. Kirill Marchenko tied it 2-2 at 11:26 of the third period for Columbus.
"It's one of the best feelings to get an OT winner, that was a huge win for us," said Johnson, who also had an assist. "These are the type of games you want to play in; they're really fun and have great energy. You have to manage the game to get the win. I think we've been pretty good in OT all year, but I think we're getting more comfortable in these tight games."

Adam Boqvist had two assists, and Joonas Korpisalo made 34 saves for the Blue Jackets (15-30-3).
Connor McDavid had an assist to extend his point streak to 11 games, and Stuart Skinner made 24 saves for the Oilers (27-18-4).
"It's a bit frustrating, I think we had enough looks and chances to probably win the game," Edmonton defenseman Tyson Barrie said. "It certainly wasn't our best game, but we gave ourselves a chance. It was disappointing to let them come back, and then OT is kind of anyone's game."
Boone Jenner scored at 12:25 of the first period to give Columbus a 1-0 lead. He tipped in a point shot from Adam Boqvist.
Derek Ryan tied it 1-1 at 10:17 of the second period on a shot from the slot.
"In the first period, we turned the puck over 11 times," Oilers coach Jay Woodcroft said. "I thought it got better as the game went on, we were a little more simple through the neutral zone. Their team competed hard. It wasn't a perfect night for us in any way at all. I saw a lot of bobbled pucks, stick-to-skate passing; not as crisp as we had been.
"But we had a 2-1 lead going into the third period against a team that was competing very hard against us. In the end, we made a mistake, got rolled out of a corner and beat to the net and ended up with only one point instead of two."

Korpisalo made an outstanding glove save on Leon Draisaitl at 15:36 of the second on an Oilers power play to keep the game tied, but Zach Hyman scored on the same power play at 16:16 to give Edmonton a 2-1 lead.
"It was just instincts," Korpisalo said. "I think it was Hyman who got the puck in front of the net and I thought he was going to shoot there, it's a good shooting spot, but he still made that one extra pass and I was just trying to get something in front of it."
McDavid assisted on Hyman's goal to give him an NHL-leading 89 points (40 goals, 49 assists) in 49 games. He has at least one point in 28 of his past 29 games.
"It's always disappointing when you don't get two points, I think we let one slip away there," Ryan said. "Credit to them; they played a good game and took advantage of their opportunities. There are no easy games in the NHL, every game is going to be hard. That being said, I don't think we played our best tonight, I think we maybe overcomplicated things a little bit."

Marchenko tied it 2-2 at 11:26 of the third period. He took the puck to the net out of the corner and scored on his own rebound. The rookie forward has 11 goals in 25 games.
"I thought in the third, we had some good shifts and [Marchenko] does a heck of a job pulling it from below the goal line and getting to the other side of the net and jamming away there," Blue Jackets coach Brad Larsen said. "Then you can feel there was energy in our group. It was a good period, a solid period."
NOTES: Columbus forward Gustav Nyquist left the game at 17:12 of the first with an upper-body injury. He will be evaluated Thursday. … McDavid has 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) during his point streak, the longest active run in the NHL. … Hyman (47 games) became the third Oilers player to score 25 goals prior to the 50th game of the season, joining McDavid (40) and Draisaitl (28). Edmonton is the first team with three players to reach the mark before 50 games since Mario Lemieux (45), Jaromir Jagr (41) and Tomas Sandstrom (35) did it for the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1995-96.
