Islanders rally for OT win, hand Flames fifth straight loss

Noah Dobson scored at 4:02 of overtime, and the New York Islanders rallied for a 4-3 win against the Calgary Flames at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on Monday.

Dobson one-timed a pass from Mathew Barzal from the top of the slot on the power play.
Barzal had three assists, and Anders Lee and Kyle Palmieri scored in the third period for the Islanders (8-5-0), who have won six of their past seven games. Ilya Sorokin made 43 saves.
"Huge win," Dobson said. "We knew we didn't have our best first 40 (minutes), but we stuck with it. We got one in the third, crowd got into it, momentum, and we just carried on from there. It's not pretty, but it's a big win. Showed a lot of character coming back there, and just a big goal in overtime."

Mikael Backlund scored twice, and Jacob Markstrom made 28 saves for the Flames (5-4-2), who have lost five in a row (0-3-2).
"We made some mistakes that cost us," Backlund said. "Maybe that happens when the team isn't feeling at their best, but we've got to turn this around. It starts with one win, and then we've got to go from there."
Lee cut Calgary's lead to 3-2 at 10:08 of the third when he scored on a rebound of Brock Nelson's initial shot, and Palmieri tied it 3-3 at 11:07 with a shot from the top of the left circle under Markstrom's left pad.
"Everyone was going in the third," Lee said. "We knew it was a game we had an opportunity to come back in. Once we got to our game, everyone that was going out there was making something happen."

Backlund put Calgary ahead 1-0 at 11:16 of the first period when he corralled a backhand cross-slot pass from Jonathan Huberdeau and shot by Sorokin's blocker.
At the time of the goal, the Flames were outshooting the Islanders 9-0.
Sebastian Aho scored his first goal of the season with a shot over Markstrom's blocker after receiving a seam pass from Barzal to tie it 1-1 at 12:26.
Elias Lindholm put Calgary back in front 2-1 at 16:21, deflecting Noah Hanifin's point shot glove side on Sorokin.
"We weren't playing well to our identity," Dobson said. "We weren't closing guys. We were slow to pucks. We didn't get any forecheck going. Credit to them, they're a good team. They took it to us pretty good. Lot of resiliency shown in the third."
Backlund extended the lead to 3-1 at 14:06 of the second period when his shot from the top of the right circle deflected in off the left post and under the crossbar.

Calgary had a 30-12 advantage in shots through two periods but were outshot 19-11 in the third.
"I thought we had a great start," Huberdeau said. "We didn't play a full 60 minutes and they took advantage of that. That's what we have to control, play a full 60. Overall, I thought we still played with effort. At the end of the day, it's not enough."
NOTES:The Flames have led in five of their six losses this season. ... The Islanders have won six straight games against Western Conference opponents to start the season for the first time in their history. ... Calgary defenseman Nick DeSimone was minus-1 in 9:30 of ice time in his NHL debut. ... Islanders forward Cal Clutterbuck left the game after the first period because of an undisclosed injury.
