CGY@PHI: Atkinson buries rebound for overtime winner

PHILADELPHIA -- Cam Atkinson scored 45 seconds into overtime to give the Philadelphia Flyers a 2-1 win against the Calgary Flames at Wells Fargo Center on Tuesday.

Atkinson scored from the bottom of the left face-off circle on the rebound of a Sean Couturier shot from the right side off a 2-on-1 rush. It was his first goal in nine games.
"Definitely wasn't my prettiest snipe but stuck with it," Atkinson said. "'Coots' made a good play. I wasn't sure ... what he was doing actually. My face lit up pretty good when it came to me and all I had to do was bury it, and huge two points for us."
Kevin Hayes scored for Philadelphia (8-4-2), which has alternated losses and wins its past eight games (4-3-1). Carter Hart made 33 saves.
Jacob Markstrom made 41 saves for Calgary (8-3-5), which is 1-1-2 on its season-high seven-game road trip.
"The first two periods were a good game, and in the third they took over and we were on our heels a lot," Flames forward Elias Lindholm said.
Hayes tied it 1-1 at 4:37 of the second period. He got the puck in the right circle and tried passing through the slot, but it was blocked by defenseman Rasmus Andersson. The puck came back to Hayes, who scored with a low shot.

It was Hayes' first goal of the season in his second game; he made his debut in a 5-2 loss at the Dallas Stars on Saturday after missing 12 games recovering from Sept. 21 abdominal surgery.
Hayes pointed to the sky after scoring as a tribute to his older brother, former NHL forward Jimmy Hayes, who died Aug. 23 at age 31.
"It was a big goal," Hayes said. "The trainers got the puck for me. I'm going to give it to Jimmy's kid, Jimmy's son, Beau. It'll be one I'll remember forever."
Atkinson, who was Jimmy Hayes' roommate at Boston College, was on the ice for the goal.
"I think everything happens for a reason, and I was the first guy to hug him," Atkinson said. "Got the puck for Kevin. It's a big goal not only for our team, obviously, but for Kevin. I think we'll all remember this for a long, long time. ... I know how special this goal was for Kevin. I was just happy to be part of it."
Oliver Kylington put the Flames ahead 1-0 at 10:31 of the first period when his point shot went in off Couturier.

Calgary forward Johnny Gaudreau had an assist and a game-high 10 shots on goal. It was the most shots he's had in a game in the NHL.
"When you have that many good looks, you have to find the net," Gaudreau said. "Have to find a way to put the puck in the net. That's what cost us the game."
The Flyers improved to 6-0-0 after a loss this season.
"Stuff's going to happen. Some games, things are not going to go your way, but it can't happen two games in a row," defenseman Ivan Provorov said. "And that's our mentality."
Markstrom made the save against Scott Laughton on a penalty shot at 2:38 of the second period after Andersson was called for holding Laughton on a breakaway.
NOTES: Gaudreau, who was born in the Philadelphia suburb of Salem, New Jersey, has scored eight points (two goals, six assists) in six games at the Flyers, with at least one point in all six games. ... Gaudreau's 10 shots are tied for the most in a game in the NHL this season (Winnipeg Jets forward Kyle Connor, Tuesday; Columbus Blue Jackets defenseman Zach Werenski, Nov. 6; and New Jersey Devils defenseman Dougie Hamilton, Oct. 31). ... Flyers forward Patrick Brown did not play after the first period because of a thumb injury. Coach Alain Vigneault said he expected to have an update Wednesday. ... The Flyers inducted Paul Holmgren and Rick Tocchet into their Hall of Fame before the game.
