Matthews lifts Maple Leafs to OT win against Flames

TORONTO -- Auston Matthews scored at 2:32 of overtime to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 2-1 win against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Arena on Friday.

"It was just keeping our composure tonight," Matthews said. "When they scored, we didn't get down. I thought we played pretty solid throughout the whole game, they're a really good team and play well within their structure. They make it hard to generate offense, especially on the inside, so I think we just stuck with it and grinded it out."
Vladar said it was a goal he felt he should have prevented.
"I would love to face that shot again," Vladar said. "I have to make that save and give us a chance."

Ondrej Kase scored, and Jack Campbell made 30 saves for the Maple Leafs (9-5-1), who have won seven of eight games.
"We're playing hard and everybody was doing their job going back hard into the zone," Campbell said. "The defensemen were making great plays and the forwards were helping out and there were a lot of blocked shots again tonight. It was kind of a playoff feel. Calgary is a deep team with a lot of great structure and [they] don't give you too much. Their goalie played amazing tonight and really kept them in it, especially on a back-to-back for them."
Oliver Kylington scored, and Vladar made 35 saves for the Flames (7-3-4), who are 0-2-1 in their past three. They were coming off a 4-2 loss at the Montreal Canadiens on Thursday.
"I thought we played a really good game," Calgary coach Darryl Sutter said. "We have been playing really well, just haven't scored. I thought Dan was really solid. They've got a lot of high-octane shooters. The goalie has to make some good saves, which he did."
The Flames went ahead 1-0 at 4:55 of the third period when Kylington scored on a give-and-go with Johnny Gaudreau, shooting over Campbell's outstretched left pad.
"It was a nice goal, but at the end we didn't win," Kylington said. "For me, winning is the most important thing. I don't care if I score or get points, I just want to win games, and we didn't do it today."

Kase tied it 1-1 at 12:54 when he deflected a one-timer from William Nylander at the top of the goal crease. The play began with Alex Kerfoot intercepting a clearing attempt from Kylington and passing to Nylander.
"A lot of positives to take from this game, but we wanted to win obviously," Kylington said. "I'm [ticked] off right now. I think you understand why."
The Maple Leafs were 0-for-3 on the power play; the Flames were 0-for-1.
"I think it's getting there, the ability to be comfortable in lower-scoring games," Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe said. "It certainly was not there earlier in the season. We felt we needed to score every shift early in the season, but I think we are settling into the realization of just it takes time, we have to be patient and can't open ourselves up defensively. I thought we did a good job here today of protecting Campbell and not giving them a lot of really clean looks."
NOTES: The Flames have scored four goals in their past three games. ... Maple Leafs center John Tavares had three shots in 20:57 after missing a 3-0 win at the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday with a lower-body injury. ...
