CGY@VAN: Gaudreau wins it 23 seconds into overtime

VANCOUVER -- Johnny Gaudreau scored a power-play goal 23 seconds into overtime, and the Calgary Flames defeated the Vancouver Canucks 4-3 at Rogers Arena on Monday.

Brock Boeser's shorthanded goal tied the game 3-3 with 31 seconds left in the third period, but Gaudreau converted on the same power play in overtime with a one-timer from the bottom of the right face-off circle.
"Just a great pass by [Sean Monahan]," Gaudreau said. "Kind of sold his shot. Goalie was a little bit slower to get over and [I] kind of just had an empty-netter."
Rasmus Andersson had two assists, and Jacob Markstrom made 30 saves for the Flames (8-6-1), who trailed 2-0 in the first period. They also bounced back from a 3-1 loss against the Canucks on Saturday, when they were outshot 46-19.
"I thought we were much, much better tonight," Calgary coach Geoff Ward said. "Definitely a step in the right direction."

Thatcher Demko made 23 saves for the Canucks (7-11-1), who have lost seven of their past eight games (1-6-1).
The Flames won two of three games in Vancouver, with the finale of this four-game set to be played in Calgary on Wednesday.
"To get a late goal like that, you can feel it on the bench," Canucks coach Travis Green said. "A lot of guys said it was a big goal to get a point, especially with the way things have been going."
Tanner Pearson scored at 3:51 of the first period, just as a power play was about to expire, to give Vancouver a 1-0 lead.
Bo Horvat made it 2-0 at 14:44 when he scored on a 5-on-3 power play with a one-timer from the slot.

The Canucks were 2-for-6 on the power play.
"There's been games where I've said they've been good and just haven't scored. I didn't think they were very good tonight," Green said of the man-advantage. "I didn't think they were sharp, passing wasn't sharp, on the outside."
Milan Lucic one-timed a pass from Andersson in the slot with 25 seconds left in the first period to make it 2-1.
Andersson was removed from the power play and the Flames' top defense pair, according to Ward.
"We all played well after the 2-0 goal," Andersson said. "To get one with 20 seconds left in the period, it's obviously a momentum shift."
Elias Lindholm tied it 2-2 at 10:40 of the second after Horvat's turnover to Andersson at the Flames blue line created a 3-on-1 rush.
"We're happy we had the push back and obviously got into the overtime," Horvat said. "In my opinion, we shouldn't have gone to overtime in the first place. We made, including myself, just a bad giveaway and it's unfortunate, but we've just got to learn from it and move on."

Dillon Dube was credited with the goal that gave the Flames a 3-2 lead at 15:51 of the second period after Canucks defenseman Nate Schmidt banked a pass from below his own goal line off Dube's stick at the side of the net.
"It just went off my stick and in, I don't know. I thought [Lucic] got it," Dube said of his new linemate. "Our line (Dube, Lucic, Sam Bennett) was forechecking really hard tonight and we got rewarded for it."
NOTES: Gaudreau moved past defenseman Mark Giordano and center Mikael Backlund for second in Flames history with his eighth overtime goal in the regular season. Monahan leads with 11. … Backlund did not play because of a lower-body injury sustained Saturday. He is day to day. … Calgary forward Buddy Robinson played 3:17 in his season debut. … Flames defenseman Connor Mackey, who made his NHL debut Saturday, had an assist on Lucic's goal for his first point and was plus-2, but he was called for three minor penalties. … Demko is the first Canucks goalie to start three consecutive games this season.
