Gagner's goal lifts Jets past Flames

WINNIPEG --Connor Hellebuyck made 33 saves for the Winnipeg Jets in a 3-2 win against the Calgary Flames at Canada Life Centre on Tuesday.

Brenden Dillon, Josh Morrissey and Sam Gagner scored for the Jets (24-13-1), who have won three straight.
"It's almost like we just expect [Hellebuyck] to be almost exceptional every night," Dillon said. "We're really lucky here with the Jets to have him.
"[Hellebuyck] picks up our bench when we need a save or a turning point like that, and for us to be able to get some run support for him, it feels nice to reward him after how well he's been playing."

Mikael Backlund and Nikita Zadorov scored for the Flames (18-14-7), who were 5-1-1 in their previous seven games. Jacob Markstrom made 22 saves.
"Close game," Calgary coach Darryl Sutter said. "We've played a lot of close games this year. You need one of your big scorers to step up and make a play."
Dillon gave the Jets a 1-0 lead at 14:50 of the second period, deflecting a point shot from Dylan DeMelo.
"We put a lot of focus in training camp on getting our 'D' a lot more involved," Winnipeg coach Rick Bowness said. "There are five guys around the net, and it's tough to make cute little plays in there. It really is. The only way to get them to move is to get the puck back to your defense, then someone has to come out a little bit, which opens up a little space around the net."

CGY@WPG: Gagner scores go-ahead goal in the 3rd

Zadorov tied it 1-1 at 19:00 with a shot five-hole from the high slot on a rush.
"I think as the game went on we started finding our legs," Zadorov said. "They're an experienced team, they play tough hockey, especially at home. We lost the coverage on all three goals, kind of cost us today. They scored more goals than us, that's the result."
Morrissey put Winnipeg back in front 2-1 at 10:22 of the third period. He scored glove side from near the left hash marks after Kyle Connor knocked the defenseman's lofted pass back to him.
Backlund tied it again 2-2 at 11:58, tucking a backhand five-hole on Hellebuyck on a breakaway.
"It's a frustrating loss," Backlund said. "It was a tight game, came down all the way to the end, and it's frustrating because we've got to find a way to win this game. It's another one that we let go, didn't find a way to win."

Gagner responded for the Jets to make it 3-2 at 14:20 when he deflected Ville Heinola's one-timer just inside the right post.
"There's certain parts of our game we need to clean up for sure," Gagner said. "But that's a team that's chasing us in the standings. We want to stay ahead of them, so we have to keep climbing. So an important win for us."
NOTES: Dillon's goal was his first of the season. … Connor has six points (one goal, five assists) during a four-game point streak. … Flames forwards Elias Lindholm and Tyler Toffoli each had an assist and has three points (one goal, two assists) during a three-game point streak.
