The Calgary Flames have some awesome retro jerseys, and now goalie Mike Smith has the perfect mask to match.

Smith debuted a new retro-style mask Saturday, which honors Mike Vernon, the lone Stanley Cup-winning goalie in Flames history.

The mask was painted by David Arrigo, and it is based off Vernon's helmet he wore with the Flames from 1982-94. The helmet has images of Vernon's hair and ears on each side and Smith's No. 41 on the back.

Smith unveiled the mask at Flames practice Thursday, and it received rave reviews from Vernon, a Calgary native who helped the Flames to the championship in 1989.
"I think it's so cool," Vernon told
the Flames website
. "I've always said that history is so important, in any business, but nowhere more than in the sports business.
"I don't think he's honoring me. I think he's honoring the past; that's what's important."
Smith needed a new mask to accompany the Flames retro jerseys, which they wore for the first time this season in Calgary's 7-4 victory against the Vancouver Canucks. The first-year Flames goalie had some trouble with a design initiallhy, but then it just clicked.
"I was kind of struggling with it," Smith told the Flames website. "It just popped into my head one day, and that was last week, so my designer did an unbelievable job to get it ready, and it turned out awesome."
