The 28-year-old defenseman hasn't played since he was scratched ahead of Montreal's Kraft Hockeyville preseason game against Ottawa Senators on Oct. 6.
The following day, the Canadiens said Matheson was taking a therapy day before listing him as day to day with a lower-body injury on Oct. 10.
Matheson was acquired by Montreal in a trade with the Pittsburgh Penguins for Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling on July 16, 2022. He had 31 points (11 goals, 20 assists) in 74 games last season.
Montreal, which opened its season with a 4-3 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday, called up Corey Schueneman from Laval of the American Hockey League on Thursday. He was scratched for the Canadiens' 3-0 loss at the Detroit Red Wings on Friday.
