The 21-year-old forward missed his second straight game when the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Boston Bruins 8-5 at TD Garden on Thursday.
"He's gotten better; he's just not quite over the hump," coach Travis Green said after the morning skate. "We want to make sure before he goes back in."
Boeser had four points (two goals, two assists) in his last game, a 7-6 overtime victory against the Colorado Avalanche on Nov. 2. He did not play in a 3-2 shootout loss at the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday.
Green said Boeser would not necessarily be out for the rest of the Canucks' six-game road trip, which continues at the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday, the New York Rangers on Monday, the New York Islanders on Tuesday and the Minnesota Wild on Nov. 15. That will depend on the results of the meeting with the specialist.
"We don't have a real good understanding," Green said. "We've done an MRI on it. It was negative. But we just want him to see a specialist and make sure."
Boeser, who injured his groin in a 4-1 loss at the Winnipeg Jets on Oct. 18, has 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 13 games this season.
A Calder Trophy finalist last season, Boeser had 55 points (29 goals, 26 assists) in 62 games before a season-ending back injury against the Islanders on March 5.
"He wants to play," Green said. "Obviously he was feeling better about his game the other night. But that's life in the NHL. He wants to play, but we've got to make sure he's ready to go. [There's a] chance he could be back by the end of the trip. There's a chance he won't be. We'll see what comes out of it."
