Bjorge, who has Down syndrome and wasn't going to attend prom, took to social media to ask Boeser, her favorite player, to the dance. Her mom, Katie Marcotte, didn't know this and shut down her social media accounts.
Bjorge and her family were on vacation in Florida when Boeser got in touch with Marcotte, who didn't know who Boeser was, but her sons did and convinced her they had to end their vacation early so Bjorge could go to prom with him.
"He is really cute," Bjorge
told Valley New Live
in North Dakota. "I was pumped and I did cartwheels like five times."
Bjorge, who has been a fan of North Dakota for years, bought her prom dress before returning home Saturday for the prom and her nails matched Boeser's tie.
"I wanted to do [North Dakota] green for him and I got the No. 16, it's my lucky number," Bjorge said.
Marcotte was overwhelmed by Boeser's gesture, but said North Dakota has always been generous to Baylee and the family.
"They've always, through the years, just been the greatest boys and they have always included her in everything, which has made her feel so special," she said.
Boeser, 19, was selected by the Canucks in the first round (No. 23) of the 2015 NHL Draft. He helped North Dakota win the National Championship this season and his 35 goals tied for first in the United States Hockey League in 2014-15.
"He has changed my life," Bjorge said. "He is always in my heart and I will go to all the games like I always do."
Marcotte said she has a new favorite NHL team.
"As for the Vancouver Canucks, we are officially fans," she said.
