It's always an emotional day when a captain leaves his team. Things were no different for Captain, the Washington Capitals service dog trainee.
Captain made the announcement that his days with the team are finished with this portion of his training complete. He is set to continue his service dog training and will eventually be placed with a veteran , active-duty service member, or first responder with disabilities.
i’ll still be posting here as i go to training camp in a few days so keep following along !! and today im seeing my buds for the last time as a member of team pic.twitter.com/vBBSPHle8B
If you had any doubt about the team's love for Captain, Washington shared a photo on Twitter of forwards Jakub Vrana and Garnet Hathaway clammoring to say hi to their old friend during their pregame skate on Saturday.
Captain received lots of love from the players during his 17 months around Capital One Arena. For his initial introduction, he was carried down the red carpet by captain Alex Ovechkin before the Capitals' home opener in 2019, a moment that was immortalized in a hockey card.
Captain, a Labrador retriever, was also voted NHL's Best Dog by fans in the 2020 NHL Fan Choice Awards. Captain's formal training was done by America's Vet Dogs , a non-profit organization whose mission is to help veterans live with dignity and independence.
