NEW YORK --Josh Bailey had a goal and an assist, and Thomas Greiss made 26 saves to help the New York Islanders to a 4-1 win against the Carolina Hurricanes at Barclays Center on Saturday.

Anders Lee and Brock Nelson each had two assists for the Islanders (12-8-2), who scored on their first two shots. New York has won back-to-back games and is 9-1-0 against the Metropolitan Division this season. Three of those wins have come against Carolina.
"I think we have a good understanding of their game," Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. "This is the third game that we've played them. You've got to be in certain lanes, you've got to protect certain areas of the ice and you don't allow them what they do really good. They pressure and they break you down and they get inside positioning and all those things that teams want to do against you. I thought we did a pretty good job."

Justin Williams ended Greiss' shutout with 6:37 remaining in the third period, and Scott Darling made 15 saves for the Hurricanes (11-9-3), who had won three in a row and were 5-1-1 in their previous seven games.
Carolina entered averaging 40.5 shots per game but was held to 27 against New York.
"We wouldn't have beat a minor-league team. That's what we looked like out there tonight," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "I don't even think they played well. It was a gross game for two periods. They capitalized on mistakes we gave them, and they hunkered down."
Valtteri Filppula made it 1-0 at 3:39 of the first period when he took a pass from Leo Komarov at the Islanders blue line, skated into the Hurricanes end, cut toward the net and split two defenders before flipping a backhand shot over Darling.

"I was just trying to look for some empty room there," Filppula said. "I turned out to be 1-on-1 with the goalie. It felt good to get that goal."
Anthony Beauvillier scored his fifth goal in his past five games at 9:01 when he one-timed Bailey's feed across the crease to make it 2-0.
The Islanders outshot the Hurricanes 6-5 in the first period.
"It wasn't there today," Hurricanes forward Lucas Wallmark said. "Tough first period. Put this game behind us and we have to move forward to the next one."
Bailey gave the Islanders a 3-0 lead at 13:17 of the second period when he took a pass from behind the net by Nelson and put a shot between Darling's skates.

CAR@NYI: Nelson feeds Bailey from behind the net

"We put a lot of onus on wanting to have a good start to the game," Bailey said. "I think for the most part, we did that. I think anytime you limit a team to five shots [in a period], you're doing something right."
Adam Pelech made it 4-0 when he took a pass from Lee and beat Darling with a wrist shot from the left face-off circle at 8:52 of the third period.
Williams one-timed Wallmark's cross-ice feed from the left circle for a power-play goal and the 4-1 final score.

"On the contrary to what we've done lately, they're the team that jumped on us," Williams said. "They played better and deserved to win."

They said it

"It's a tough one because we wanted to keep moving forward, but man, I've never seen us play that bad. That was really poor, to a man. Each guy, we didn't come ready to go and we got what we deserved." -- Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour
"We just played a good team game again. We didn't give them too many chances. We played a solid game. We scored early and took the momentum right away." -- Islanders goalie Thomas Greiss
