The 30-year-old goalie could have been an unrestricted free agent July 13. He was 11-6-5 with a 2.79 goals-against average, .914 save percentage and three shutouts in 26 games (24 starts) for the Penguins this season. He made 52 saves in a 4-0 win against the Boston Bruins on April 21, the most in a shutout in Penguins history.
"You look at the market, there's not a lot out there," Penguins general manager Ron Hextall said. "Casey's a pretty good goalie. He's played very well for us. He's well liked and he fits in well, so it's kind of a bit of a no-brainer for us."
DeSmith had core muscle surgery May 6 after he was injured in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First Round against the New York Rangers, his Stanley Cup Playoffs debut. He made 48 saves on 51 shots before leaving at 9:18 of the second overtime of a 4-3 triple-overtime win against the Rangers on May 3.
Signed by Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent July 1, 2017, DeSmith is 43-28-11 with a 2.67 GAA, .915 save percentage and nine shutouts in 96 regular-season games (82 starts).
