Blackhawks recover, top Red Wings in OT

DETROIT --Dominik Kubalik scored his second goal of the game with 17 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena on Monday.

Pius Suter, who hit the post earlier in overtime, set up Kubalik's goal on a 2-on-1 against forward Vladislav Namestnikov.
"When I'm practicing those plays, I'm watching the goalie to see if I can open up the five-hole," Kubalik said. "I'm really glad that worked out."
Red Wings defenseman Filip Hronek got caught deep in the Blackhawks zone on the winning goal.
"I think hockey is about taking what's given, not about forcing things," Detroit coach Jeff Blashill said. "That's something we will talk about tomorrow."
Mattias Janmark scored, and Malcolm Subban made 27 saves for Chicago (8-5-4), which is 6-1-1 with four overtime wins in its past eight games.

"We stole that one," Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton said. "That wasn't our best effort, but [Subban] made some saves when we needed them and a few guys made plays to get us goals. Now we have to be much better on Wednesday."
Namestnikov and Christian Djoos scored, and Thomas Greiss made 21 saves for Detroit (4-10-3), which got points in consecutive games for the first time this season.
"We're playing sound defensive hockey and we're starting to create chances," Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin said. "We've just got to start turning these games into two points."
Janmark gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead at 4:19 of the first period, scoring with a one-timer off a behind-the-back pass from Carl Soderberg.
"He's a big guy and he drew three guys to him, so I just tried to stay away from the play and give him room," Janmark said. "That was a great play."

Kubalik made it 2-0 at 16:09 when he tapped in Brandon Hagel's centering pass following a turnover by Namestnikov, who then cut it to 2-1 at 19:45 when he shot into an open net after getting to a loose puck.
"I didn't have an even-strength goal this season, so I'm really happy that one went in," said Kubalik, whose previous three goals came on the power play. "I think Hagel did a great job beating the guy with his speed and he put it right on my stick."
Djoos tied it 2-2 at 5:49 of the third period, deking Alex DeBrincat before scoring his first goal with Detroit from the high slot.
"Making it 2-2 was a big goal for us, and we were really going for it after that," Djoos said. "We just couldn't get another goal."

The Red Wings were 0-for-2 on the power play and are 0-for-26 in their past nine games.
"That's obviously a continued sore spot," Blashill said. "We have games where it doesn't look so bad and then we go backwards again. We've used a lot of different guys in different situations, but not enough people have stepped up."
NOTES:The teams are scheduled to play again here Wednesday. … Djoos' goal moved him past his father, Per, on Detroit's all-time scoring list. Per had 12 assists in 26 games with Detroit in 1990-91. … Chicago is 8-2-4 since an 0-3-0 start.
