Glass boosts Blackhawks past Oilers in overtime in debut

EDMONTON -- Jeff Glass made 42 saves in his NHL debut, and Patrick Kane scored 50 seconds into overtime to give the Chicago Blackhawks a 4-3 win against the Edmonton Oilers at Rogers Place on Friday.
Ryan Hartman, Alex DeBrincat and Jordan Oesterle scored for the Blackhawks (18-14-5), who ended a three-game losing streak.

Glass made 18 saves in the first period.
"It was pretty good, a little more exciting than I needed it to be at the end, but unbelievable goal by Kane] there in overtime," Glass said. "In the first period, it felt nice to touch the puck. I'm sure if I didn't have any shots, I would have been sitting there wondering what's going on. It kind of felt routine after that."

Glass, a 32-year-old Calgary native, was recalled from Rockford of the American Hockey League on Wednesday. He got the start in place of Anton Forsberg, who played the previous two games after No. 1 goalie Corey Crawford sustained an upper-body injury in a 4-1 loss at the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 23.

"For him to kind of be a journeyman, to wait this long for his first career NHL start, to be close to home for him, the way he played tonight, you can't really write a better script," Kane said. "You got to be ecstatic for him. We were all jacked up after the game. Probably happier than a normal win in the regular season just because he was in net."
Jesse Puljujarvi, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Leon Draisaitl scored for the Oilers (17-18-3), who have lost two in a row following a four-game winning streak. Cam Talbot made 32 saves.
"We had so much momentum going. We were outshooting them, outplaying them and out-chancing them, and then we take back-to-back penalties (in the second period) and they get a goal and take away the momentum," Oilers forward Pat Maroon said. "It kind of changed the game. I thought we stuck with it though. We battled back, and that's a point we need."
Puljujarvi scored on the power play at 14:26 of the first period to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead.

Hartman tied the game 1-1 with 55 seconds left in the first.
DeBrincat put the Blackhawks up 2-1 at 14:06 of the second period when he scored on the power play.
Oesterle scored his first NHL goal with a shot from the point on the power play at 8:28 of the third period to make it 3-1.
Chicago was 2-for-3 on the power play. Edmonton has the worst penalty kill in the League at home (57.4 percent).
"It's the most baffling thing, and it seems like I explain something different every night when I talk about our penalty kill," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. "Tonight, we cheated on the first one when we're going for offense and we cheated. And the second one, we shouldn't have been penalty-killing. Too many men on the ice, completely under control, didn't need to have it. We lost a draw and they shot it past guys and [Talbot] was a little bit screened. But I can't explain why we're a 30 percent swing home (compared to) away (85.1 percent)."
The Oilers scored two goals late in the third period with Talbot pulled for the extra attacker.
Nugent-Hopkins made it 3-2 with 2:19 remaining when he scored with a shot from the left point.

Draisaitl tied it 3-3 on the rebound of a Nugent-Hopkins shot with 54.2 seconds left in the third.
"That push at the end for us is something we can build on," Nugent-Hopkins said. "Even though we had a ton of shots, I still don't think that was our cleanest game."
