CHI@NJD: Zajac follows up to pot Wood's rebound

NEWARK, N.J.-- The Chicago Blackhawks allowed at least seven goals for the fifth time this season, and lost their fourth straight game, 8-5 to the New Jersey Devils at Prudential Center on Monday.

Kyle Palmieri and Blake Coleman each scored twice, and Mackenzie Blackwood made 27 saves for the Devils (18-20-7), who won consecutive games for the first time since winning three straight from Dec. 27-31.
"There are things in our game plan that we didn't execute and weren't detailed enough on," Palmieri said. "You're not going to score eight goals every night. There's definitely some stuff to tighten up, but it was good we found a way to win."

Patrick Kane extended his point streak to six games with two goals and two assists for the Blackhawks (16-23-9). Cam Ward allowed six goals on 25 shots in two periods, and Collin Delia made 14 saves on 15 shots in relief.
"[The game] is one that you throw in the trash and move on," Chicago captain Jonathan Toews said. "You remind yourself what makes you a good team. That's work ethic, commitment to the little things, winning your battles, getting pucks deep and making things difficult for the other team. When we get back to doing that, we're going to get the results."
Kane tied it 1-1 with a power-play goal 3:07 into the second period before the Devils scored five times to take a 6-1 lead.
Palmieri scored on a breakaway at 5:16 and on the power play at 8:27 to make it 3-1. Travis Zajac got it to 4-1 at 10:07, Sami Vatanen scored a power-play goal at 14:58 to make it 5-1, and Kevin Rooney scored his first NHL goal in his 11th game at 17:58 for a 6-1 advantage.

Goals by Kane at 18:19 and Seabrook at 19:01 got Chicago within 6-3. It was Seabrook's 100th NHL goal in 1,051 games.
"It looked like we were out of it but never really out of it," Blackhawks coach Jeremy Colliton said. "[Kane] makes a couple of plays and we're right back in it. We wanted to play him as much as we did (28:50 in ice time). Obviously with 11 forwards (and seven defensemen), he's going to get more, and he was really good."
Brett Seney scored against former Merrimack College teammate Delia 8:10 into the third period for a 7-3 lead. Dominik Kahun made it 7-4 at 8:48, and Brandon Saad made it 7-5 at 18:28. Coleman scored into an empty net at 19:26 for the 8-5 final.

Coleman gave the Devils a 1-0 lead seven seconds after serving a holding penalty when he stole the puck after exiting the penalty box and scored on a breakaway 13:50 into the first period.
"It's certainly a challenge in some ways to play as detail-oriented when you've already put up six and it's still the second period," New Jersey forward Brian Boyle said. "It's a professional thing. You have a finite amount of time in this league. You don't know when your next shift is going to be. It's certainly something we can learn from."

They said it

"I just think at the end of the day they outworked us. Our work ethic has to be there to give us a chance to win. On their first goal, it's a lucky break in a sense [Coleman] steps out [of the penalty box] and it is right on his tape and it's in the net. We had too many mental errors and our work ethic was not good enough. Sometimes you just get off kilter and off page for a period and a half and that's all it takes for a game to get blown open." -- Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith
"We did lots of good things, but we played somewhat an immature game at times. We get up 6-1 and we just go to sleep at the end of the second and you can't do that. It's excellent that we found a way to win the game, but there's lots of learning lessons in this game of maturity, understanding game situations and understanding every team in the League is good. We got casual at times and we paid for it." -- Devils coach John Hynes
