MONTREAL - Today, Prime Video in Canada announced two Amazon Original hockey documentaries in collaboration with NHL Productions. Set to premiere in 2024, Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle highlights the Quebec-born teenage hockey phenom, positioned to be the saviour of the expansion Ottawa Senators. While he never lived up to those lofty expectations, the former first-overall pick's career was remarkable and turbulent. The documentary chronicles that journey as Alexandre Daigle, himself, reflects on life - both on and off the ice. Then, Saving Sakic follows the high-stakes saga that ensued when Colorado Avalanche Chairman/CEO Charlie Lyons was blindsided by an attempt to sign away the captain of his team, future Hall of Famer Joe Sakic. With only seven days to raise $15 million to save his star, Charlie finds a lifeline from an unexpected place - Hollywood.
Prime members in Canada enjoy savings, convenience, and entertainment, all in a single membership for just $9.99/month or best value $99/year. ESPN+ subscribers in the U.S. will have exclusive access to both documentaries as part of the platform's offering of original NHL content.
"Hockey is universally beloved across Canada, and our commitment to delivering unparalleled entertainment across multiple genres—including sports—continues for our customers with Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle and Saving Sakic," said Nav Saini, head of content, Canada. "Showcasing players from the east coast of Quebec to the west of British Columbia, both documentaries share riveting stories of two Canadian stars who have made an impact to the history of the game."
"After our collaboration on All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs, we are thrilled to work with Prime Video again," said NHL Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Content Officer Steve Mayer. "Prime Video shares our enthusiasm for telling compelling stories and featuring the NHL's all-time greatest characters. We think the authentic and entertaining narratives in Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle and Saving Sakic will resonate with our hockey audience but most importantly, beyond. We can't wait for everyone to see these two documentaries."
Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle, chronicles how a record-setting junior hockey star - charismatic, French-speaking teenager Alexandre Daigle - was positioned to become a saviour for both the city of Ottawa and the Senators, a team that desperately needed goals and fans. With overwhelming expectations, Daigle fell short of what the team and fans had envisioned. Decades later, Daigle reflects on how he navigated the gap between people's projections and his everyday existence to love life and hockey while living with the fans' pronouncement of his failure.
Saving Sakic follows the saga of Colorado Avalanche Chairman/CEO Charlie Lyons, as he looks to secure big dollars to save his all-star captain, Joe Sakic. After an unprecedented offer from the New York Rangers to Sakic—the captain and lifeblood of Lyons' beloved NHL franchise—Lyons has seven days to find $15 million or lose everything he's spent years building. Lyons has no chance to beat the ticking clock, but somehow, he finds a lifeline from an unexpected place: Hollywood.
Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle and Saving Sakic are directed by Jay Nelson for NHL Productions. Steve Mayer, Ross Bernard and Craig Axelrod are executive producers for NHL Productions. Gary Cohen is executive producer for Triple Threat.
Chosen One: Alexandre Daigle and Saving Sakic join the slate of Canadian Amazon Original series including All or Nothing: Toronto Maple Leafs, LOL: Qui rira le dernier?, The Kids in the Hall, The Lake, LOL: Last One Laughing Canada, and The Unsolved Murder of Beverly Lynn Smith. Since 2015, Amazon Studios has commissioned over 40 Amazon Original series and films in Canada, including The Man in the High Castle and Upload in British Columbia; The Boys, Reacher, and The Expanse in Ontario; Tales from the Loop in Manitoba; as well as parts of Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan and The Voyeurs in Quebec.
