Hayton lifts Coyotes to win with overtime goal

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Barrett Hayton scored at 2:00 of overtime for the Arizona Coyotes, who extended their point streak to nine games with a 3-2 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at Mullett Arena on Sunday.

Hayton took a cross-slot pass from Matias Maccelli in the right circle and beat the lunging glove of Elvis Merzlikins.
"There was a little breakdown and we got a 2-on-1," Hayton said. "He's so deceptive with the puck that he froze them and then slid it over to me. He doesn't shoot a ton, but he's got a really good shot, he's sneaky, and today he was able to freeze guys and make this play."

Connor Ingram made 34 saves, and Travis Boyd and Nick Schmaltz scored for the Coyotes (20-28-9), who are 5-0-4 during their point streak, which is their longest since a 12-game run (11-0-1) from Feb. 4-28, 2012.
Arizona has also won four straight at Mullett Arena, where it will play 18 of its final 25 games.
"I think there's been a lot of different things," Hayton said. "We cleaned up some things with a couple of practice days, our power play has been good lately, and we're just dialed in.
"We've done a really good job in here. We have an opportunity to play a lot of home games here down the stretch and we want to keep it rolling."
Boone Jenner had a goal and an assist, and Merzlikins made 22 saves for the Blue Jackets (18-34-5), who were trying to win three straight for the first time this season.
"The last little stretch here, we've played some good hockey. It's details and competitiveness, and we're kind of dialing in on that," Jenner said. "Obviously, when you do that, you're going to get better results."

CBJ@ARI: Schmaltz rips a puck in from the circle

Boyd gave Arizona a 1-0 lead at 14:14 of the first period, redirecting Troy Stecher's slap pass at the edge of the crease.
Schmaltz made it 2-0 at 16:28 after causing a turnover by Jack Roslovic in the defensive zone. He scored with a slap shot from the right circle after Clayton Keller's shot from the left circle caromed to him off the end boards.
"We played well in the first, had a sloppy second period, but we battled through the third and got two points," Arizona defenseman Shayne Gostisbehere said.
Jenner cut it to 2-1 at 13:23 of the second period, setting up in front of Ingram and deflecting Nick Blankenburg's wrist shot from the edge of the right circle.
"That was big. We had chances throughout the first and early on in the second," Blankenburg said. "Then you get one, and you can keep building off that momentum shift after shift, which ended up happening on that goal."
It was the first goal Ingram had allowed in 147:08. He earned the start after stopping all 23 shots he faced in relief of Karel Vejmelka in a 6-5 shootout loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.
"We rolled with the hot hand," Arizona coach Andre Tourigny said.

CBJ@ARI: Laine wires in a one-timer for a PPG

Patrik Laine tied it 2-2 with a power-play goal at 15:07 of the third, scoring on a one-timer from the top of the left circle off a cross-ice pass from Adam Boqvist.
"Obviously, we wanted to have a better start, but we found our game pretty good in the second and third," Jenner said. "We just dialed it up a little bit, gave ourselves a chance of competing, and it's too bad we couldn't get that extra [point]."
