DETROIT -- Joonas Korpisalo didn't have much to do for the first 60 minutes on Thursday.

He got busier in the 61st minute.
The Columbus Blue Jackets goalie faced 17 shots in regulation, then made three saves in the first minute of overtime in a 3-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena.

Artemi Panarin scored at 2:11, taking a pass from Nick Foligno and beating Jimmy Howard.
"Seventeen shots in regulation isn't many, and there were only three in the third period, but I had to stay focused," Korpisalo said. "I knew there would be a moment where I had to make some big saves if we were going to win."

Sergei Bobrovsky had started the past six season openers for Columbus, but Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella decided to save him for the home opener against the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday.
"That game could have gone in any direction in overtime, but [Korpisalo] was terrific," Tortorella said. "He made a couple really great saves."
After Korpisalo stopped Danny DeKeyser, Gustav Nyquist and Trevor Daley, the Blue Jackets were able to move the puck into the Detroit end for an extended period and Panarin took advantage of the tired Red Wings.
"They trapped us out there for a while, but you have to be able to handle that," Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill said. "We can't let the best player in the game get a shot like that in overtime."
Cam Atkinson and Josh Anderson also scored for Columbus, which outshot Detroit 39-20.
"We had full control of the game," Atkinson said. "We had plenty of chances, and probably should have scored more, but Howard is a great goalie."
Dennis Cholowski, one of five Red Wings making their NHL debut, scored for Detroit. Tyler Bertuzzi also scored, Dylan Larkin and Nyquist each had two assists, and Howard made 36 saves.
"[Howard] made some great saves for us," forward Justin Abdelkader said. "We were fortunate to get a point because we have to be better than that. They outshot us 2-1."
The Blue Jackets took a 1-0 lead on Atkinson's power-play goal at 5:12 of the first period. Pierre-Luc Dubois sent a pass from behind the net and Atkinson scored on a one-timer from the right face-off dot.
Cholowski made it 1-1 at 7:46 of the second period off Larkin's pass.

CBJ@DET: Cholowski pots first goal in NHL debut

"It all happened so fast," Cholowski said. "I saw [Larkin] look over his shoulder and I tried to let him know I was wide open."
Columbus went ahead 2-1 at 13:06 when Anderson scored on a rebound eight seconds after leaving the penalty box. Cholowski turned the puck over in the final seconds of Detroit's power play, leading to a 3-on-1.
"That's a mistake that comes with the learning curve for a young player; he has to have more awareness of the clock," Blashill said. "He can't take that risk when they are coming out of the box."
Bertuzzi tied it 2-2 with a power-play goal at 16:13. Larkin's centering pass hit Bertuzzi in the leg and went in off Korpisalo's glove.

They said it

"I really wanted to make sure we got the win in overtime because the guys had been so good in front of me all night. Right at the end of regulation, Nick [Foligno] is diving in front of Thomas Vanek to block a shot, and that makes me want to make my own big plays." -- Blue Jackets goalie Joonas Korpisalo
"We've got to get the puck out of our end but you have to expect some struggles when you are playing four rookie defensemen. We could never establish a forecheck because by the time we got out of our zone we had to change lines." -- Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill

Need to know

Atkinson became the 11th player in NHL history to score in five straight season-openers and is the only active player to do so. … The Blue Jackets have won their past seven games against the Red Wings and 17 of the past 22. … Red Wings defensemen Libor Sulak and Filip Hronek also made their NHL debut, as did forwards Christoffer Ehn and Michael Rasmussen.
