Penguins win 3rd straight as Guentzel scores a pair

PITTSBURGH-- Jake Guentzel scored twice for the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 5-1 win against the Columbus Blue Jackets at PPG Paints Arena on Tuesday.

Sidney Crosby had three assists, Evgeni Malkin and Bryan Rust each had a goal and an assist, and Tristan Jarry made 26 saves for the Penguins (39-16-9), who have won three in a row and five of six. Forward Rickard Rakell had two shots on goal after being acquired Monday in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks.
"We're just trying to get better every day," Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan said. "That's what we keep telling our team. We have to become a team. We've got to push each other to be better every single day. Every game is an opportunity for us to grab points in the standings."
Joonas Korpisalo made 32 saves for the Blue Jackets (32-29-3), who have lost two of three.
"[Pittsburgh is] a pretty good team. They've been around for a while," Columbus coach Brad Larsen said. "You know you have your hands full right away. But you put them in the same category as the Tampa Bays, the Carolinas, the Floridas. Those are dangerous teams. They're very elite. You've got to be on your game. You've got to be sharp."

CBJ@PIT: Penguins take lead with 2 goals in tight

Gustav Nyquist gave Columbus a 1-0 lead at 8:37 of the first period by diving to tap in a loose puck on a power play before Pittsburgh scored five straight.
Radim Zohorna and Guentzel scored 36 seconds apart in the second period.
Zohorna tied it 1-1 at 2:40 on a wrist shot from the slot off a rebound. Guentzel gave Pittsburgh a 2-1 lead at 3:16 by taking a pass from Crosby through the crease for a wrist shot from the right face-off circle for his 30th goal of the season.
"We're learning as a team we can give up a goal, and sometimes two, we can come back," Blue Jackets forward Sean Kuraly said. "It's just when you give up a few. It's a tough mountain to climb against world-class players and team. Not taking anything away from them, but we think we can be in games like this, no question.
"If we lose in a tight one, we lose in a tight one. But from our point of view, 20 guys, we can be better."
Rust made it 3-1 at 7:28. After tipping the puck away from Blue Jackets forward Cole Sillinger, Rust drove to the net past Sillinger and below defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov for a wrist shot.
Guentzel extended the lead to 4-1 at 14:06, when a snap shot from Crosby deflected off him.
"We have something special here," Guentzel said. "We just have to be ready to go down the stretch. We just have to make sure we come together as a team as fast as we can."
The Penguins outshot the Blue Jackets 32-14 in the first two periods, including 20-7 in the second.
"If we're not playing with structure, they're going to make us pay," Columbus defenseman Zach Werenski said. "Thought we started off the game well. They're getting some chances. I thought [Korpisalo] made some big saves. Then in the second there, they have their push and we don't really have an answer for it."

CBJ@PIT: Guentzel hit by Crosby's shot near crease

Malkin made it 5-1 at 8:54 of the third period with a snap shot on a 5-on-3 power play.
Rakell played 14:08 primarily at third-line left wing after missing his final three games with the Ducks with an upper-body injury. Sullivan said Rakell could be elevated into the top six at some point.
"Coming here, the warm welcome I got from the whole organization, the players, it's been great," Rakell said. "Had a lot of fun. Legs weren't the best I felt, but it was great to get right back into it and be around the guys, and to get the win was great."
NOTES: Crosby extended the NHL's longest active home point streak to 11 games (16 points; five goals, 11 assists). It is his longest streak since scoring in 17 straight home games in 2013-14. ... In the trade for Rakell, the Penguins sent forwards Zach Aston-Reese and Dominik Simon, goalie prospect Calle Clang and a second-round pick in the 2022 NHL Draft to the Ducks. ... Columbus played its first game since forward Max Domi was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes in a three-team trade involving the Florida Panthers on Monday. Brendan Gaunce had three shots on goal in 8:19 in Domi's place.
