Blue Jackets top Capitals in OT again, extend series lead

WASHINGTON -- Matt Calvert scored at 12:22 of overtime to give the Columbus Blue Jackets a 5-4 win against the Washington Capitals in Game 2 of the Eastern Conference First Round at Capital One Arena on Sunday.
Sergei Bobrovsky made 54 saves and Cam Atkinson scored two goals for the Blue Jackets, who lead the best-of-7 series 2-0.
Game 3 is at Columbus on Tuesday.

Calvert won it when he put Zach Werenski's rebound past Braden Holtby. The goal was upheld after being reviewed for offside. The Blue Jackets won Game 1 in overtime too, 4-3.
"Two games in overtime, that can really crush a team," Calvert said.
T.J. Oshie scored the game-tying goal at 16:25 on the power play to make it 4-4.
Alex Ovechkin had two goals for the Capitals, who also lost the first two playoff games at home last season against the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"You're right now in hard position," Ovechkin said. "But it's going to be fun when we bounce back and [we're] going to tie the series and come back here and play Game 5 at home."
Jay Beagle, who played his first game since April 1 because of an upper-body injury, scored at 2:12 of the first period when he deflected Brooks Orpik's shot past Bobrovsky.
Ovechkin made it 2-0 for the second straight game with a power-play goal at 13:26.
Atkinson scored at 18:25 when Nick Foligno hit him with a stretch pass behind the defense, and he slipped the puck under Philipp Grubauer's pads to make it 2-1.

Ovechkin's second power-play goal at 4:09 of the second period made it 3-1 after a cross-ice pass from Nicklas Backstrom.
But the Blue Jackets rallied again with Josh Anderson's goal at 8:49 of the second on a 5-on-2 rush to make it 3-2. Atkinson's second goal of the game came on the power play at 11:13 of the second to tie it 3-3.
Washington went 3-for-7 on the power play; Columbus was 2-for-4.
Holtby replaced Grubauer in goal for the Capitals to start the third period. Grubauer allowed four goals on 22 shots. Holtby made seven saves.
Bobrovsky kept the Blue Jackets in it. It was 3-1 when he stopped a hard wrister from Oshie at 14:44 of the second. He denied Backstrom on the power play after a cross-ice pass at 5:29 of the second with the score tied 3-3.

"The game is dictating what I should do," Bobrovsky said. "You're still here to win and tonight dictated you have to make more saves than usual."
Bobrovsky set a Blue Jackets record for saves in a playoff game, breaking his own record of 48 set in 2014. In overtime, he spoiled a chance by Chandler Stephenson 14 seconds in to extend the game.
"I think we take for granted how special he is and how big he is for us," Blue Jackets defenseman Seth Jones said. "Some of the saves he makes in big-time situations … he gives us a chance to win every single night."
NHL teams that have taken a 2-0 lead on the road in a best-of-7 series have advanced 78.7 percent of the time (70-19).
"We're disappointed and we're mad," Backstrom said. "Yeah, we're down 2-0 and obviously we're playing a good hockey team. They've got two home games now. But we're going to do everything to turn things around. There's a lot of hockey left."
