Sheary, acquired by Buffalo in a trade with Pittsburgh on June 27, 2018, is in the final year of a three-year contract and can become an unrestricted free agent July 1. The 27-year-old forward has 19 points (nine goals, 10 assists) in 55 games this season.
"Conor returns as a known face to our team and a player familiar with winning," Pittsburgh general manager Jim Rutherford said. "He was pretty pumped when I talked to him."

Signed by Pittsburgh as an undrafted free agent on July 1, 2015, Sheary has 146 points (71 goals, 75 assists) in 317 regular-season games and 19 points (six goals, 13 assists) in 57 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He won the Stanley Cup with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017.
"The coaches felt very strong when his name came up that it would seamless for him coming back in here," Rutherford said. "He was a good player for us in those two Cup runs, and he's still a capable guy."
Rodrigues, a 26-year-old forward, has nine points (five goals, four assists) in 38 games this season and can become a restricted free agent July 1. Signed by Buffalo as a free agent on April 22, 2015, he has 71 points (26 goals, 45 assists) in 192 regular-season games.
"Evan is a skilled winger that can play any forward position and adds to our depth up front," Rutherford said.
Kahun has 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) in 50 games this season. The 24-year-old forward, who was acquired in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks on June 15, 2019, can become a restricted free agent July 1. He has 64 points (23 goals, 41 assists) in 132 regular-season games.
"Dominik, we're excited to bring a younger player into our mix, a player that is very useful, can play both wings, has a very good skill set and also has a track record of success, both over in Germany, had an opportunity to win an Olympic silver medal and numerous times played in World Championships," Sabres general manager Jason Botterill said.
Earlier Monday, the Penguins acquired forward Patrick Marleau from the San Jose Sharks for a conditional third-round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft.
"We have a close-knit team now and bringing in someone that's going to fit in makes sense for us," Rutherford said. "He brings leadership, but he's still a good player.
"Getting guys that can move up and down the lineup always helps. Marleau and Sheary can do that. Even Rodrigues, he was in and out of the lineup in Buffalo. I don't know exactly what happened there. Even there were times he played with [Jack] Eichel, so those guys can definitely move around."
