Craig Smith signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the Dallas Stars on Saturday.
The 33-year-old forward had 16 points (nine goals, seven assists) in 64 games for the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins last season, including six points (five goals, one assist) in 22 games after he was acquired in a trade with the Bruins on Feb. 23.
"Craig brings a wealth of experience and leadership to our group," Stars general manager Jim Nill. "He's a player we've been familiar with over the years, especially during his time in Nashville, and we're looking forward to having him join our team."
Selected by the Nashville Predators in the fourth round (No. 98) of the 2009 NHL Draft, Smith has 414 points (200 goals, 214 assists) in 853 regular-season games for the Capitals, Bruins and Predators and 21 points (nine goals, 12 assists) in 69 Stanley Cup Playoff games. He got his 400th NHL point with an assist in Boston's 4-3 overtime win against the Minnesota Wild on Oct. 22, and played his 800th NHL game Nov. 23, 2022, a 5-2 Bruins loss at the Florida Panthers.
The Stars also signed Sam Steel to a one-year, $850,000 contract. The forward had an NHL career-high 28 points (10 goals, 18 assists) in 65 games for the Minnesota Wild last season. He made his Stanley Cup Playoff debut with a goal and an assist in five games.
"As a developing young player, Sam has consistently taken steps forward each year," Nill said. "He's become a player who can take on a role in any situation, and we're excited to see him continue to grow over the next year within our organization."
