Oettinger records 34 saves in shutout

CHICAGO --Jake Oettinger made 34 saves for the Dallas Stars in a 1-0 shootout win against the Chicago Blackhawks at United Center on Friday.

Oettinger's shutout was his first this season and second in the NHL. It also came against one of his idols, Marc-Andre Fleury, who he wears No. 29 in honor of.
"It's crazy," Oettinger said. "Luckily before the game I got a stick from him, so I was pretty pumped about that. To go against him is pretty cool, especially to get the win in a cool building with a great atmosphere.
"When I was in high school, I was obsessed with him. I loved (No.) 29. I also loved 30 because of [Henrik] Lundqvist. I might be switching to that next year. I don't know yet."

CHI@DAL: Oettinger records second career shutout

Jacob Peterson scored the deciding goal in the sixth round of the shootout for the Stars (27-19-2), who have won two in a row and four of five.
"I tried that before, actually," Peterson said of his shootout move. "I tried it in the preseason and it worked, so I was thinking, 'Let's try it again,' and it worked out.
"Of course, it's cool to score against that guy (Fleury). I watched him growing up, so that's something I like to do, but it's not something you think about when you're there. You just think about doing your move and hope for the best, and that was it."
Fleury made 29 saves in his fourth shutout this season for the Blackhawks (18-25-8), who were coming off a 7-4 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday.
"Ah, it happens," Fleury said. "We didn't play bad, though, right? All game we hung in there and didn't do too much. Had to go all the way to settle it down. Still disappointing to come out with a loss when so close to get that win. It would be nice to get one there at home."

DAL@CHI: Fleury records 71st career shutout

Fleury made a pad save against Jason Robertson from the low slot on a 3-on-2 at 17:25 of the first period. He then denied Roope Hintz from point-blank range with 6.5 seconds remaining in the second period.
"I thought there was only one or two seconds left so I was kind of … I shot it too fast," Hintz said. "If I knew there were six seconds, I would hold it a little bit more and wait for his glove to drop. It is what it is. That was a nice save, and it didn't go in.
"He's a great goalie. He had me today, but I will get him next time."
Fleury chalked it up to good fortune.
"Sometimes I think I'm lucky," he said. "That's what I meant to do, right? I'm hoping to stop it, obviously. As a goalie, those are the ones I play for and I love doing, you know. Those are the ones that feel good inside. Players like to score. And for me, it's like I make a save that's a little bit (of a) tough one. Those are the ones that feel good. Makes me smile."
Tyler Seguin almost won it for the Stars 36 seconds into overtime, but his diving attempt hit off the crossbar.
Oettinger made his best saves shortly after to help get the game to a shootout. He stopped Patrick Kane on a 2-on-1 at 45 seconds before getting across to make the save on a one-timer from Alex DeBrincat 10 seconds later.
"He's on his game right now, and we need him," Dallas coach Rick Bowness said. "He's making huge saves for us. We played really well defensively, and so did they. That was probably the best defensive game they played in a while. I'm sure (Chicago coach) Derek (King) got after them after giving up seven last night. And Fleury was great for them. He made some phenomenal saves for them, but Jake made the big saves at the right time."
King said he was happy with his team's effort.
"It was good," he said. "Solid effort and that's a good hockey team. Obviously, 'Flower' made that big save for us, but for the most part we were pretty solid."

DAL@CHI: Peterson wins it in 6th round of shootout

NOTES:The Stars extended their road winning streak to six games. … Blackhawks forward Lukas Reichel was recalled from Rockford of the American Hockey League earlier in the day and had two shots on goal in 17:41 of ice time.
