The Dallas Stars have signed defenseman Jordie Benn to a three-year contract, they announced Friday. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Benn could have become an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

"Jordie has earned the trust of his teammates and the coaching staff, and he's taken advantage of every opportunity put in front of him during his career," Stars general manager Jim Nill said. "His ability to play in a variety of roles make him valuable to our defensive depth and flexibility, and we're happy to have him locked up for the next three seasons."
Benn, signed in 2011 as an undrafted free agent, had three goals and 12 points in 64 games. He was scoreless in one Stanley Cup Playoff game. In 244 NHL games, he has nine goals, 56 points, 95 penalty minutes, 327 hits and 369 blocked shots.
The 28-year-old is the older brother of Stars captain Jamie Benn.
