Stars stay alive, defeat Lightning in 2OT in Game 5 of Cup Final

Corey Perry scored his second goal of the night at 9:23 of the second overtime, and the Dallas Stars prevented the Tampa Bay Lightning from winning the Stanley Cup with a 3-2 victory in Game 5 of the Cup Final at Rogers Place in Edmonton on Saturday.

"It was do-or-die for us tonight, and I thought our team game was pretty good," Perry said. "We had a lot of guys, they're in the fight. That's what we're asking for. I scored the winner, but it could have been anybody. That's what we're asking of everybody."
Joe Pavelski tied the game 2-2 for Dallas at 13:15 of the third period. It was his 61st NHL postseason goal, passing Joe Mullen for most by a United States-born player.
"We hang in there, we really do," Pavelski said. "We stick with it, stick with the plan. We've been through a lot together. We're in a hole, this gets us a step closer, but we've got a ways to go. We've got better hockey still, and huge win, what a goal at the end there."

Anton Khudobin made 39 saves for the Stars, who had lost three games in a row since a 4-1 win in Game 1 on Sept. 19.
Ondrej Palat and Mikhail Sergachev scored, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 30 saves for the Lightning, who were trying to win the Cup for the first time since 2004.
"It's obviously not the outcome you want," Tampa Bay defenseman Victor Hedman said. "But at the same time, we knew it was going to be a hard series and, you know, we had some good looks in overtime and throughout the game. But it wasn't our night."

Game 6 of the best-of-7 series is in Edmonton, the hub city for the Cup Final, on Monday (8 p.m. ET; NBC, CBC, SN, TVAS).
Sergachev scored on a one-timer from the left point at 3:38 of the third period to give the Lightning a 2-1 lead.
"I mean, we were close, 10 minutes away," Sergachev said. "But the job's not finished. They scored a goal. Didn't hold the lead."
Perry gave the Stars a 1-0 lead at 17:52 of the first, scoring off a loose puck in the slot. He has scored three goals in his past two games after not scoring in the previous 19.
"You just have an understanding that whatever it takes, he'll try to find a way to win," Pavelski said. "That's what he does, that's the way you can feel the mindset in the locker room, on the ice. Whatever it takes. It's been there, and no bigger moment for us than tonight. Showed up and got it done."

Palat tied it 1-1 at 4:37 of the second when he skated around defenseman Esa Lindell, cut in front of the net and tucked the puck past Khudobin.
"I thought we played a good enough game to win," Palat said. "I felt in overtime we really tilted the ice. We had a lot of possession, a lot of chances. We just didn't score on them. Yeah, they're a good team. They battled back."
Dallas was outshot 7-2 in the first overtime and did not have a shot on goal for the first 16:45 of the period.
"I think we enjoy being called underdogs," Stars center Tyler Seguin said. "Every person really this whole time we've been in the bubble [seems] to choose the other team we're playing. We relish that. We believe in each other. We've got a confident group, and we don't want to leave the bubble."

The Lightning, who won Game 4 5-4 in overtime Friday, are 5-0 following a loss in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
"Anytime you lose a game in the playoffs, you're disappointed," Tampa Bay coach Jon Cooper said. "But we've been pretty good at responding after losses. Like I've said, we've been doing this for over two months, so we've got a good idea of what's ahead of us and how to respond."
NOTES: It is the first time in NHL history that there were overtime games in the Cup Final on consecutive days. … The Stars are the 12th team to win Game 5 when facing the end of the series after losing Game 4 in a best-of-7 Cup Final (since 1939). None of the previous 27 teams won the series; four reached Game 7. … Stars forward Roope Hintz did not play after he left Game 4 in the second period after he slipped on Tyler Johnson's stick and slid into the boards.
