that his playing career was over
after he tried to rehabilitate a knee injury.The 35-year-old goalie hadn't played in the NHL since the 2019-20 season and has one season remaining on a six-year, $29.5 million contract ($4.92 million average annual value) he signed with the Stars on May 12, 2017.
Bishop played three games for the Stars in their run to the Stanley Cup Final in 2020 and then missed the 2020-21 season after having surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee Oct. 21, 2020. He was placed on long-term injured reserve recovering from the surgery, and Stars general manager Jim Nill said in December that Bishop would remain on LITR through the remainder of his contract.

Bishop was acquired by the Stars in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings on May 9, 2017. He was 74-48-11 with a 2.33 GAA, .923 save percentage and 14 shutouts in 143 games (139 starts) with Dallas.
Selected by the St. Louis Blues in the third round (No. 85) of the 2005 NHL Draft, Bishop was 222-128-36 with a 2.32 goals-against average, .921 save percentage and 33 shutouts in 413 games (397 starts) in 11 seasons with the Blues, Ottawa Senators, Tampa Bay Lightning, Kings and Stars.
He was 29-21 with a 2.27 GAA .924 save percentage and five shutouts in 52 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
Dallas qualified for the playoffs this season, losing to the Calgary Flames in seven games in the first round.
Buffalo, which has missed the playoffs for 11 straight seasons, currently has three picks in the first round of the 2022 draft: Nos. 9, 16 and 28.
The 2022 draft is scheduled for July 7-8 at Bell Centre in Montreal.
